Vmware tools on Leopard

I have seen the instructions, but they state I must be in text mode, I take it this means in terminal ? I have tried the command stated while the vmware tools has been unzipped but I get an error.

I am using vmware workstation btw

Anyone know what I am doing wrong ?

Is this VMWare in Windows, or OS X? What OS are you trying to install?
