Thought I'd throw this out on its own thread. VMware just released the GA version of their client server called Virtual Server (v1.0.0.x) It used to be sold as GSX server, but now they are giving it away for free. Just Download, register for a serial number and you are done. It runs on linux and windows, and works quite well. They also sell an enterprise version, but that is more for business customers and they charge for that one.

the fact that it runs on windows and linux wins my vote over MS virtual server.

enjoy.

Will this work just like the regular VMware, say, for testing new programs on a desktop PC?

If you install Windows on the virtual machine, u can do whatever u want. (except anything 3D).

I wonder if they're doing this because MS is giving away VirtualPC 2004 SP1, or vice versa.

Excellent, thanks. I remember the hot deal to get this free if you attended a seminar, but I couldn't make it, so this seems a pretty hot deal to me if it isn't time-locked or limited in some other way.

If you want to use XP as a host, use the free VMWare Player in combination with freely available utilities for creating VMWare virtual machines.

 what are you talking about, i installed vmware server on my xp pro and i have built a solaris server on vmware. you can download vmware server for all machine building and "playing" purposes. its a free but full featured product. if you have to run multiple machines and need to manage them remotely, you can even do so by installing IIS 6 through windows add remove components. you can then manage the machines and view their performance anywhere. i guess the only thing is vmware do not support you running vmware server on a non-server host OS machine

I was under the impression that it required a server host OS, but apparently that's not the case.

I get so confused with these things.... All I want to do is run some compiler software that, as far as I know, won't run under Windows XP or OS X. So I'd like to be able to run the software virtually from XP or my G4 Powerbook. Can either of these products (VMware or the MS offering) help me do that? I'd imagine I'd have to install Fedora or something somewhere, but assuming I had it running on a partition, I could do that, no?

Yes. Install VMWare server, create a new virtual image, grab a Fedora disk, and install. It's really, really easy to do.

There aren't many differences.

At my company, we have used VMware workstation, server, and player. One difference in Workstation is the ability to create multiple snapshots as you make changes in the virtual machine. This is useful for QA - which is what we use it for. We didn't see this feature in the free server (the server formerly known as GSX server). However, I'm not sure if this feature is now in the "1.0" release.

With the free products (Player and Server), you can have most of the functionality of WorkStation. If you need multiple snapshots, go with WorkStation.

Something neat - check out the list of pre-built VMware appliance images!

Good stuff!

(I like it better than Microsoft's Virtualization Products!)

The beta version does require a server OS. I've been running it on Win2003 with WinXP and Win2000 VMs for a few months. It would not install on a WinXP PC. I can't speak for the GA release.

i would think that even though you cant make snapshots (basically like a point in time backup), you can still copy the entire folder and make a backup or image of your virtual machine with vmware server, granted this will take more space than the workstation snapshots (it will then keep your new changes/differences in a separate physical file on the host OS so that you can revert back), but at least the free version is still good for your QA or testing purposes.

as for the beta not being able to install on XP, I still find that weird, I've installed vmware server beta on my XP Pro (I did not upgrade until the GA, (or General Availabilty) release yesterday, and I am 100% sure that I no longer use the VMware workstation (since personally I am not licensed :p) so I don't understand why some of you are saying it would only work on a server OS? maybe a very early version of VMware server?

i love virtualization, been playing with it for well over a year now

edit: did anyone try to install vmware on a virtual machine?

VMWare Server has been free for a while now...the main difference is that it requires a host OS to run on top of, where the Enterprise edition (Infrastructure) installs below the OS...

My only issue with it is that it will not run with XP as the host, where MS Virtual Server R2 will (I have it running on XP, with FC5 installed on the VM)

If you have a windows server OS, I'd go with the VMWare product...but for a sandbox at home, the MS product works great...

Maybe people consider XP Pro a server OS?

I hope that this new version doesn't die and require a reinstall every month or whatever like the betas. I wouldn't mind so much except that it's slow as hell to uninstall and reinstall on my laptop and they have so many startup scripts, etc, at work that it takes like 10 minutes to reboot.

Does VMware have a server for OS X? It'd be sweet to rig up a Mac Mini as a VM server. Currently I only know of Parallels Desktop for Mac...
