I use vista 64bit and have had it for almost a year and a half. I have vmware workstation 6.5 and have windows 7 in it now. I had it a month ago and had been working with it with no problems at all. Then my brain fried and I deleted the virtual w7 file and had to reinstall. The problem is now I can't seem to get and internet connection. What can I do in vmware to get one? Or do I need to do something in vista? Thanks.

No, I probably should. I have never done that. Will that affect what I have installed already?

You can't get an internet connection from within Windows 7? Is your VM configured for NAT or Bridged networking?

Reinstall help me fix my networking related to parts not working right and I had no network for any on my VMs. Its shouldn't mess with any of your VMs configurations.

I cant remember but I think it will ask to uninstall installed software then it will reinstall that shouldnt be a problem. That how it works on upgrades anyways.

Reinstall really shouldn't be necessary. It should just be a matter of properly configuring his VM network settings and VM virtual adapters.

So what the proper way to fix the network problem?

Can you give more detail on how it not being accepted? Can you do a fresh install of Windows 7 or does it have information you need on it?

I had to update my vmware after the reinstall and it accepted the window 7 install. The first time I used it though it let me on the internet no problem. This time I had to do a lot of figuring on which way to get on the internet. I could not use bridged or nat, I had to use custom, but now it works.

Yeah, but now I messed up something else. I can't get my computers on either end to see the network. It can't see the other computers and folders.

I just looked at VMWare with Windows 7 and it using NAT no problem. What version of VMWare you using for hardware compatibility? How is your custom network setup?

I had been using it without a problem too but then I needed to do a os repair and it got a little messed up. I think it was me though. I had to uninstall vmware to get my network to work again but it now does. I will reinstall vmware and hope it goes. It should.

No go. I am really struggling on getting vmware to connect to the internet. I had it going when I first got it and had no problems for over a month. I then had to do some things and bam, it does not connect to the internet. I think I may have made some changes in it that I can't seem to correct. Does anyone on here know anything about vmware? What about the virtual network editor which is what I think is the problem, I think. HELP!!!!

Are you using your bridged or NAT adapter? What IP address / subnet is assigned to your adapter? What IP address is assigned within your W7 VM?

EDIT: Also, can you confirm that the VMWare DHCP Service and VMWare NAT Service are running?

I had to use the custom setting to get it to work.
Ip address is 192.168.1.98
subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
As for the other there are so many things to look at. Which place do I go in vmware to find this? Not quite sure. That is part of my problem yet.

DHCP all services say stopped.
Nat vmnet1 is started but when I go check vmnet0 or vmnet8 it that they are bridged to a physical adapter. This may affect the physical network.

It is confusing. I'll try and break it down so that I can get a better picture of your setup.

1. In VMWare, with your W7 virtual machine open go to the VM menu and select settings. Under Network Adapter, do you have Bridged, NAT, Host-Only or Custom checked?

2. In VMWare, go to Edit / Virtual Network Settings. Click on the DHCP tab. Look for the adapter that matches what was selected in my first question (Bridged = VMNet0, NAT = VMNet8, Host-Only = VMNet1). What is the Subnet and Netmask listed for that adapter?

3. Still on the DHCP tab, does the Service status say "Started"?

4. On the NAT tab of the Virtual Network Editor window, does the NAT service say "Started"?

Ok, when I open the editor the summary says this
vmnet0 bridged bridged to an automatically chosen adapter 255.255.255.255 enabled
vmnet1 nat used to share the hosts ip 192.168.121.0 enabled
vmnet8 host only a private network shared with host 192.168.44.0

next tab auto bridging is checked

next tab host virtual mapping
vmnet 0 says bridged to an automatically chosen adapter
vmnet1 vmware network adapter vmnet1
vmnet8 vmware network adapter vmnet8

next tab host virtual adapters
1 and 8 both enabled

next tab DHCP
VMnet0 192.168.184.0 255.255.255.0 vmnet0 stopped
VMnet1 192.168.121.0 255.255.255.0 vmnet1 stopped
VMnet8 192.168.44.0 255.255.255.0 vmnet8 stppped

next tab NAT
VMnet 0 when I go to it say it is bridged to a physical adapter. This may affect the physical
network.
Same for VMnet 8
VMnet1
Gateway IP 192.168.121.2
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Started

Is that all you need? Did I give you all you need?

Ok, sounds good. I would recommend:

1. On your host PC, start the VMWare DHCP service.
2. Open up your Windows 7 VM (don't start it). Under Settings, select NAT for your network adapter.
3. Boot up the Windows 7 VM.
4. Within Windows 7, configure your Local Area Connection to Obtain an IP Address automatically.
5. Within Windows 7, open a command window and run "ipconfig" to see what IP address has been assigned to your adapter.

1. For host you mean my pc, right? How do I start the VMware DHCP service? I'm beginning to think I am stupid.
2. easy enough
3. even easier
4. I am very new to W7 so I will try, not sure where to go though.
5. I can handle this.

Not at home right now but will try later tonight.
Thanks for your help.

1. Yes. You can either click the Start button on the DHCP tab under Virtual Network Editor, or you can go to Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services, scroll down to the VMWare DHCP Service and click Start.

4. I'm not sure exactly how that's done either in W7. Didn't you say that you manually configured the IP address to 192.168.1.98?

I go into my services and hit start. It starts and then stops and then comes up with a message about some things start and stop if they are not being used. I have tried it with vmware on and off.
