VMM32.VXD problem

Someone I know replaced his vmm32.vxd file with another one from another computer. I know this file is unique to each computer, and he does too now since he can't boot in win98se. It gives him the error that the file can't be found and that he might have to reinstall windows.

I'm going over to his house tomorrow, and I'll check if the file can be found somewhere else on his hard drive. If it can't, will reinstalling windows over itself fix this? (and if I do this, will all his programs stop working, or will it just repare like win2k does?)

Thanks for any help

have you created a 98 repair disk? (well, actually I guess you have never, otherwise, you'd have tried already). Maybe you can borrow one from other people (not sure if the repair disk is machine specific. I haven't touched a 98 box for long time).

no this isn't for me, and I doubt a repair disk would work since that file is different from machine to machine
