VMGL provides OpenGL acceleration in VMs in Linux..

That's awesome and I'm really surprised that the performance they got was so good. Sadly it's not that interesting since it only works on guests that use X, most people who want GL acceleration in a VM want it because they either want to play Windows games on Linux or play with Beryl/Compiz on Linux and run the opposite OS on the host.

Vmware is working on better DirectX support (at least for full screen vms). That should help the situation a lot...
 
Ya, looking at that whitepaper.

The performance is pretty good. Ranging from no drop in performance for paravirtualized applications to 14% drop for Enemy-Territory running under Vmware.


they do mention that while it only supports X-using OSes right now it probably would be possible to extend it to Windows and OSX. Maybe use WineD3D or something to provide DirectX to OpenGL translators. Wine has pretty decent DirectX 9 support and I'd bet Cedega should be interested in this.
 
There was a patch sent to the QEMU mailing list a month or two ago that gave partial OpenGL support as well. This is definetly the next frontier for Open Source VMs.

But it'll probably require the workstation version which isn't free...
