I haven't heard too many people talking about this program for the Android. I've been trying to find something similar to iOS Air Video for the Android and this is the closest I've found. It's not as simple to setup like Air Video nor is the quality as good but it works. I tested it with my Galaxy S, and I had no problem streaming videos from my computer. So if you want to stream any videos, pictures, or music from your computer/server to your Android phone or tablet, give this a try. http://traveldevel.com/vlc-stream-convert. I'm using the free version which limits you to just videos.

Now that I can stream any videos to my TV, iPad, or Android phone I'm happy. Now if only Netflix was available for the Android.

What version of VLC are you running and what are your VLC/VLC S&C settings?

I've had so much mixed success with VLC S&C and VLC Direct. VLC S&C gives me horrible quality with certain versions of VLC , to the point where I shouldn't even bother watching. When I upgrade past VLC 1.1.0 I get higher quality video but no sound no matter what combination of options I try.

VLC Direct works much better (audio plus higher quality), but doesn't have softsub support. That renders the majority of my library moot.

I keep trying every month or two on different installs and systems, but have pretty much given up on quality streaming support on Android with softsub support.

VLC S&C didn't work so well for me. Random crashes, stuck on portrait and only showing the movie in the top half of my screen, etc.

I found that PlayOn is the best solution for this right now. The 14-day trial allows you to stream Netflix/Hulu/etc, and you'll have to pay (monthly, annual, or one time fee) to keep it, but the local media streaming feature is available even after the trial period expires. It works really well except for one very annoying thing: for most video file types, you can't fast forward.

Using VLC 1.1.8 with Window 7 Pro 64bit, dual-core E5800 3.2ghz. I did the detailed steps on the setup page here. http://traveldevel.com/vlc-stream-convert/setup

Video quality is good for me and similar to Air Video on my iPad and XBMC on my Apple TV2. I can get portrait and landscape mode full screen. I haven't figured out how to enable subtitles or stream outside my local network using my phone 3g. But inside my house on WiFi, videos stream really well with no pauses and I can fast forward and rewind at will. I'm using Galaxy S phone which has same/similar cpu as my iPad and ATV2.

I probably should try it again. I'll have to remember to do this when I get home this afternoon. Like I said above it has tons of problems when I tried it, but this was 4-5 months ago so it's possible they have fixed some of the issues.

Can you fast forward?

Yes, I can fast forward, rewind, and jump to any part of the video. It would be great if someone with an android tablet could try this program and report back. This program would be far more useful on a tablet.
