VLC still the best out there for video player?

Even with VLC's latest version I've been sticking with Homecinema. VLC still need to iron out UVD acceleration and the "fine" controls are a little rough (I do some screencaps). XBMC works well for HTPC playback.

MPC-HC plays Quicktime mov files perfectly fine right out of the box. You just need to choose a proper DirectShow renderer under playback/output.

I misspoke. Some MOVs I have recorded don't play audio without QTLite.

coreavc is also updated often, and takes advantage of cuda cores for transcoding if you do that.

both coreavc and ffdshow now support 10bit video, so... dunno if vlc does.
 
The .iso compatibility is the thing that makes vlc great and is a deal breaker on everything else for me. It is a pain to have to use virtual clone drive and all that mess and then wait for the image to mount.
 
I prefer the combined community codec pack, and BS player. I've used MPC as well, but I don't find it upscales very well.
 
1. VLC (For double clicking a file), MPC-HC is good to but i like VLC better, KMPlayer is good too
2. XBMC (For laying back and controlling with iphone)

Note: None requrie seperate codec installs, 1. is all about the same pick the one you like. Not sure which has best hardware accel these days, all seem great havent had issues for about a year with any.
 
Is there any way I can just install some codecs and use media player? I don't feel like installing another application for my videos when I use MP for all my music.

Download the combined community codec pack. With it installed any media player on your system will play any media file you download.

I mainly use GOM. VLC is installed though I never use it. Personally, I would use KMPlayer and Media Player Classic over VLC. VLC annoyingly associated many media types to use that program, so it constantly reminds me it is still there.
 
This thread is the perfect example that there is not a one stop shop. I use winamp with ffdshow but even that does not play everything I come across. I also use Media Player Classic and quicktime player too when I need too.
 
VLC has this nice feature where you can play the video slightly faster (by 10-30%..). It's also portable and plays pretty much anything.

So I have no reason to switch right now. Although I know some other players handle GPU acceleration better (at least on ATI), but I rarely need that.
