Been using Mac's for a few years and haven't had as much of a need to watch local video files on a Windows box for a good amount of time.

I'm watching a bunch of .wmv video files now on my Windows 7 64bit work laptop at a job I just started though and VLC just feels sluggish and more bloated than it used to.

Seems to not do well with pausing and restarting or seeking/fast forwarding.

Is it still considered one of the best out there or has something else come along in recent times I'm not away of that does a better job?

It's still my preferred player. I use it on Windows, and Linux.

it has never been the best

Agreed, i tried it when i got my AVCHD camcorder but too many settings and i could not get the deinterlacing to work right. I found Mirillis Splash Lite for free and love it. the video quality is the best that I have seen and the best part, it works great without needing to worry about settings like VLC.

KMPlayer still the best one out there with video and audio quality. Can't get better than that.

WMP + Haali media splitter (for mkv containers) on Win7 pretty much plays everything I need. I guess add in ac3filter if you watch lots of videos with DTS tracks.

The best in what terms? easy to use it sure is VLC. No need to install additional stuff. Works out of the box. So yeah for normal users I would recommend VLC but not so for a HTPC.

Yep very true. Plus it goes by the standards. Only player that can directly play a .iso of a dvd you create too. No other media player can do that. You have to first mount the image.

Best Free Media Player

http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-windows-media-player-replacement.htm

"PotPlayer is now our new king of media players.:) PotPlayer is an intuitive and a powerful Multimedia player published by Daum written by the same author as The KMPlayer. It’s feature packed, easy to use and provides awesome video and audio quality. Some may call it KMPlayerRedux with more stability and versatility."

"Warning: DO NOT update PotPlayer from the options menu within the program. It downloads the Korean version of the player. Download it from the link given in the Quick Selection Guide only, which is the English translated version. Additionally you can toggle the updates setting to 'Do Not Use' through Right click->Preferences->General menu"

"You can always get the latest english translated x86 beta here http://www.dvbsupport.net/download/index.php?act=view&id=230 (thank you so much to the translators, without whom none of this would be happening ) and the latest english translated x64 stable build there http://www.dvbsupport.net/download/index.php?act=view&id=236 (they don't release x64 betas)."

It plays any and everything!!

Ok, we get it, you do not like VLC. What effing player do you use?

To the rest, I personally use VLC for everything including music. So I like it.

I use VLC for everything. If it wont play a file I toss the file as I dont feel like installing more shit and more crappy codecs.

One thing that bugs me about VLC is the way it doesn't bring itself to the front when it's in the background and you play a new video. MPC is my default.

MPC here for it's versatility and its very clean and easy to use interface.

VLC feels a bit clunkier. Although it seems more robust in being able to play damaged files. I still keep it around for those times.

I've used both VLC and MPC (+FFDShow) for years. It's very, very rare that a file doesn't play on either, and I've gone through a ton of files and formats.

I still recommend VLC because it works with minimal interference needed for most files, and it has advanced options (like transcoding) if you need them. It's a convenient application to have installed on a flash drive, and it works pretty well on most hardware.

i used kmplayer but it lacks high volumes, but their customize layouts are nice.

vlc does everything so i don't bother with other players.

I got away from VLC; it's good for quick checks on a file, but if I'm watching movies, no go. Doesn't do hardware acceleration correctly.

I generally use XBMC for most of my media playback, but that's on an HTPC. WMC is my 2nd choice, if you install the right codecs.

why would you use mpc with a codec pack?

There are a couple formats that MPC-HC doesn't play natively. The most prevalent is Quicktime MOV (which can be done with QTLite).

Even with VLC's latest version I've been sticking with Homecinema. VLC still need to iron out UVD acceleration and the "fine" controls are a little rough (I do some screencaps). XBMC works well for HTPC playback.
