The VideoLAN foundation has not generally sought ways to monetize VLC, but some source of funding or revenue could help ensure long-term support for the project. To that end, Kempf said VideoLAN is exploring a Plex-like business model, with ad-supported free video streams available in the player. "That is something that could work for VLC," he explained. But it was clear nothing is final on that front yet.
I guess all good things come to an end.

reading more about that, it doesn't seem like such a threatening thing.

If the software stays open source, it's also always possible to make a VLC version without that functionality. Just with another name since VLC and the cone are probably copyrighted.

It was a good player back in the times, but nowadays, you can find better players for MAC OS. You can listen only to mp3 files with it, and it is not so comfortable nowadays. Personally, for my MacBook, I am using OmniPlayer because it is very comfortable. It can read any file type you will ever want. I usually listen to music on it, but sometimes I can watch movies on my MacBook. When I am on a long trip, and there is not internet for Netflix, downloaded movies on the MacBook is a good solution, to spend some time interestingly.

MAC OS? Yeah... sure. We know Apple cultists only use iTunes, no matter what :D
