I normally use it to watch .mkv files. Somehow my VLC is messed up. I think it's something i did by accidence clicking a button, etc.

Now, when I try and open a file it opens the Media Browser screen and sows a playlist with the title of the file in it but nothing happens. I can double-click or right click and choose Play on the filename but nothing happens. It's doing this with every file (some I have played before in VLC) so I know the files are good.

Anyone happen to know what I might have changed?

View-deselect docked playlist and close VLC.
or view>playlist

Not sure ,but give it a try.

Thanks. Still have an issue with one particular file but at least it's not in the Browser window. It just won't play.

Anything else good with .mkv files.

That's kinda weird with VLC. If it is a preferences/options thing, you can clear and reset the preferences (if not via a start menu option, via uninstalling/reinstalling).

I have VLC installed as a just in case, but I normally use the community codec pack plus a separate download of the latest 64 bit Media Center Classic Home Cenima. I tend to get better image quality and subtitle rendering from Home Cinema w/ FFDSHOW than VLC.

mkv is just a container - like a zip file. the media inside can be a variety of types that will or will not playback on some devices. vlc isn't the best - it just has all of its codecs hard linked so you don't need a codec pack which is nice. once you start using your own codecs you will have to tune the playback engines to make sure they are using the right codecs together using a mapper. otherwise a fancy new codec might never be used and it will fallback to an inferior codec (or not play at all).
