What name brand RP DLP can you get in the 56" range for $2600?

You can get the Toshiba 52HM84 52" for $2800 shipped, no tax. Not quite there, but close. The Toshiba is an HD2+ model, like the more expensive Captain Kurk model Samsung, too. Great set.

He's getting it from Costco. That fact alone makes it a very good deal. Years later when DLP is considered the same as we consider Black and White now, Rossman can go into Costco and return/exchange for the original purchase price.

56" DLP for $2600 sounds like a good deal. With a name like Vizio (Microsoft?), though, I would pay close attention to who makes the backlight/lamp assembly.

Wow, that's a damn good price. But a question on the lamps... how much do they cost to replace? I've been thinking of waiting for the new Samsungs, which supposedly you could buy lamps off the shelf and replace them yourself.... but i'm in need of a TV pretty damn badly.

If I were serious about buying an HDTV I'd probably get a Sony, Toshiba Cinema Series, Hitachi, Samsung or Panasonic.

The lamp is about $300 last I read, needs replacement like every 12,000 (guesstimate) hours or whenever it burns out.

I would definately use a UPS (prob would have to go with a 1000VA-2000VA) with automatic voltage regulation to help prevent the electronics from straining in the set.

Which UPS would you recommend?

well, i scored some of those $30 APC 1000VA from officemax a long time ago. APC seems to be a well known brand. Tripp Lite makes some nice ones too.

I'd suggest a UPS that can output a pure sine wave, if you plan to use it with HT electronics. The stepped output of most UPS's is really REALLY ugly (looks like a staircase), and is really more suited to the switching power supply design on computers.

The reasoning behind me suggesting a UPS or AVR-type device is because household voltage fluctuates widely. The more fluctuations the more the electronics in the TV have to compensate, like the TV's power supply or transformers etc. I'm sure that the bulb would last longer under a constant voltage.

Wouldn't an APC surge supressor be sufficient?

It has a $25,000 warranty on it.

well, yes at the minimum, i'd reccomend a well known surge supressor, like APC or tripp lite (i hear that Tripplites' isolated surge supressors are good). For most practical purposes, an AVR device wouldn't be needed, unless you happen to get very noticable brownouts/voltage fluctuations. Most of the time, my voltage doesn't fluctuate more than +/- 8 volts from 115.

Be VERY carefull if you are using a multimeter to measure the voltage of your house.

Samsung HLM617W for around $2650, it's not a 56", it's a 61".. nice huh?
It's not the newest in the line up, but still not a bad set.

make sure you get a HLNxxxW1 if you're gonna get the one generation older model. Slight improvements over the non 1. Text
