Yeah, the patent ran out so there has been generics around for a little while. Not too long though, couple years at most. And I'm pretty sure they advertise viagara so hard BECAUSE there are now alternatives.
For the same reason Tylenol still sells, brand recognition.
I just came back from Mexico (Playa de Carmen) and the frigging tourist town souvenier shop has Viagra (and all it's variants, competitors) right on the shelf. I guess it's all over the counter over there.
According to this page the viagra patent is in effect until 2012. If you do a search on the drug name Sildenafil it doesn't look like anything comes up besides Viagra or another product by the same company called Revatio.
My bet is generics are gray market coming from overseas.
