I can't install visual studio.net enterprise architect because it keeps asking for a windows componet update disk. I tried all 4 cds but never was able to find the windows componet update disk where can this disk be obtained. Can I download it from technet.

I don't know the exact location, but the Windows Component Update disk should be a part of the VS.NET set.

I'm fairly certain that the component update is on disc #5.
The entire Enterprise Architect edition of VS.NET is 7 discs, but only 5 of them are needed during the install.
Disc #6 has Visio and disc #7 has Visual SourceSafe.

Yes.

But it can also be used as a powerful tool to architect your software in UML (and some others it supports). I'm not a software architect so I know very little about it but my boss (he's an architect) uses it all the time and loves it (and hates it when it screws up). It's really neat, imo.

quick question, does visual studio.net have product activation? I refuse to use products that require activation. I have a full retail version of VS .NET pro that I got for school for free but VS 6 academic is workign fine for me. I'd like to kno cause opening it would lower the resale value and make it hard to sell on egay

You aren't supposed to be reselling it if you got it for free. If you merely purchased the Academic edition, then you can resell it.
Reselling the software (when it is clearly marked NFR) isn't a big thing, but it does bug me a little bit. After all, you're taking advantage of a company's goodwill (albeit M$ :) )
