Visual Studio 2005 Express? Is this what I think it is?

It sounds like MS is targeting the people who code for a hobby (freeware, open source, maybe shareware) who don't wanna spend hundreds of dollars just to have a nice IDE for rapid app development. Hmm... maybe I'm wrong.. but at least that's what it seems like. Imagine picking up Visual C# 2005 Express for under $150 or so. That would rock..

What the hell, you said freeware, opensource, shareware... then mention paying $150 for Visual C#? I don't care I get Visual Studio for free from school anyways, suckers.

tfinch2: I didn't say it was freeware. I'm talking about the people who code for a hobby.. they code either freeware, open source, or shareware usually. PS, you too will be a sucker once you graduate from school and don't qualify for those deals anymore.

ttown: It's free now because it's beta. I don't know if it will remain that way though.. I can't imagine MS handing out VS Express for free... that would be sweet, though.

Ah, here's more info. Looks like they will charge for it, it will just be low cost.

MDesigner, ther ehave bene a few thread on here about the express editions. Of course it wont stay in beta (free). They are great for amaturs/hobbyists though.

Yeah, totally.. I can't wait till pricing information is released. I've been looking for an affordable way to code for fun & develop freeware/shareware apps.

Hobbyists already have SharpDevelop http://www.icsharpcode.net/OpenSource/SD/, which is free and can do basic stuff pretty well.

I use SharpDevelop. it's still too much in its infancy for my tastes. But it IS really good though.. just a few negative points:

- you can't rearrange menu items on a menu
- no easy support for drag/drop ActiveX OCX controls
- no built-in debugger
- no apparent way to compile .manifest files into the executable

Plus, with Visual Studio, you have a lot larger of a support base/community for help & tips on things specific to VS. I'll have to wait till the pricing is announced, but I imagine it won't be more than $150. I'd gladly get it at that price.
