Vista

Can anyone tell me what size vista is currently in the last beta. Is it more than
a gig or will it fit on a cd ?

Well the current builds are probably bigger than the final because of debug info, but I thought I heard it'll be on DVD so I'm assuming it'll bigger than a single CD.

The latest x86 builds have been a little over 3GB. It will not fit on a CD, and Vista will probably be a DVD only release.

WHOA...over seven gigs? Is there a reason for that? I'm obviously expecting it to increase in size...but what in the world are the packing to make it seven gigs? Does that whole Aero Experience really take gigs upon gigs? I'm just curious, because I don't beleive high resoloution icons are responsible for it 😉

There will probably be a coupon included with the Retail Box that will let you order an optional floppy disk install set.

"Finishing the install. Please insert Floppy Disk Labeled "Disk #2,999" and hit Enter....." 🙂

WIndows XP takes up a little more than 1GB, and it fits on a CD. I think the files are compressed on the CD and then decompressed when the files are copied from the CD to the HDD during the installation of Windows XP?

I remember Windows 95 was like 32MB

Heh, indeed. I still have those floppies somewhere. It was 15 disks, if memory serves me right.

Windows 3.1 was like, what, 7 disks? It was like 18MB on the HDD. And I used to think it was quite a bit! Of course that was when my Acer 386SX-33MHz had only one 40MB HDD.

The good ole days.

3.11 was 8 disks I believe.

My vista partition: Total Size: 16.0 GB, Free Space 2.86 GB.... The swap file is a ginormous 2.29 GB already. Good god. And I have 2GB of ram...

From what I've read, all the flavors of Vista will come on one DVD...don't know how that's gonna work, but hey...

90% or more of the files are exactly the same. It's the same way that MS was able to build Win2K and Win2K3 CDs that hold multiple versions of those OSes.
