Vista x64+IE7+Adobe flash player=fail

The last couple of weeks IE7 randomly locks up. Im pretty sure I have it narrowed down to flash player, I can disable it and it runs without crashing.

I used the Adobe uninstaller and reinstalled afterward but it didnt help.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Flash doesn't run in the x64 version of IE, you have to have the x32 version also installed on your x64 machine (which I think it is by default; look for a x32 .exe of the app in the IE install folder, then just make a shortcut that that .exe on your desktop)

I've been having frequent freezes of IE on a very clean install of Vista Business x32. Upon research, found that there's a problem with the current version of Flash that causes freezes in IE 7. If I disable the Flash add-in, the freezes stop.

Same issue here with X64 and Flash Player 10. If I disable FP10, no freezes, but as soon as it is re-enabled, the problem starts again on a random basis.

However, I have now tried uninstalling Diskeeper 2008 and so far (only 48 hours), I''ve had no freezes, even with FP10 enabled.

Does anyone else with this issue use Diskeeper 2008?

I think its funny people say "why use IE?" or blame IE when it has everything to do with Adobe Flash.

Flash sucks, and yes its been happening to me too. I'm sure its just a bug in flash, and since every ad service uses flash, well, frequent lockups.

And I think it's funny that people keep adamantly using IE.

And I tihnk its funny Firefox has such a fanboi following. Some people, like me, just dont like it. Security used to be a reason, but FF is just as vulnerable in many cases. IE7 is just fine.

See this
Cenzic revealed that only 10% of all browser security flaws in 2007 impacted Internet Explorer. The next in line is Safari with 15% and then Firefox with no less than 32% of vulnerabilities. Judging strictly by the number of vulnerabilities, Opera is the most insecure browser, having been impacted by no less than 38% of vulnerabilities.

This is just one of many links

I've experienced the same problem: Vista x64, IE7, and Flash 10.

The problem is, I had the same random crashes in FF3 and Chrome. Chrome at least pops up a message stating it detected an error with Flash 10, and gives me the option to stop Flash and continue with the rest of the page's content. I had no idea Flash was causing the problem until Chrome gave me that prompt.

Flash 10 seems to crash Chrome the most, IE7 the second most, the FF3 the least. I'm using FF3 now, but I'd rather be using Chrome... I just can't stand waiting 10-15 seconds every time there's a problem with Flash before I get the option to stop it and continue "as usual."

Adobe. :disgust:

I agree. I'm a web designer, and I use IE7 / Chrome as my main browsers, and only keep Firefox to make sure the websites I'm creating are playing nice with it. My co-workers nag me constantly about using IE7, but I don't see any huge benefit of switching to Firefox instead.

The fact that so many Firefox users go out of their way to try to convert you is what turns me off to it. It's like a religion now.

I know they just released an alpha of Flash for 64-bit Linux users; perhaps there is one for Vista as well.

Another option would be to try the new Opera 10; I've enjoyed it.

Yep, Flash 10 locks up IE32 in Vista X64. I went back to Flash 9 and it solved the problem.

Adobe doesn't seem to care... Still no patch for this, and still no Flash for IE64. Good job!!

With the way Adobe is going it will take them another year to offer a windows 64 bit version of flash. Not that I care.

I am also one of the people who experienced the lockups/freezes with flash 10 on my X64 Vista OS. I went back to version 9 and everything is working great now.

Below are the steps I followed to get flash 9 going in FF and IE32. If you don't want to use IE32 or FF, you would need to select the alternate archived files for your favorite browser. This procedure is not a guarantee (going back to version 9), but it worked for me and seems to be working for many others. Anyhow, hope it helps by posting it on this thread. Here were my steps below:

Temporarily shut off any anti-virus programs, and possibly shut down the side bar on Vista.
Go to Adobe's site and download and run the uninstall program for flash to get version 10 off your PC entirely.
Restart your PC and go to the following web site: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewCon ... &sliceId=2 (or use any other site of your choosing that hosts the archived versions of Adobe Flash)
Download the giant zip file for archived versions of Adobe Flash (Flash Player 9) (139 MB)
Unzip the big zip file known as fp9_archive
Inside the fp9_archive folder is a subfolder called 9r151 (this is the folder to open to get to the subfolders for what is the latest version of Flash "within" the version 9 series for Firefox (FF) and Internet Explorer for Windows users
Upon opening this folder (9r151), there is a subfolder called flashplayer9r151_win (this is the folder to run to get flash version 9 going in FF near the bottom of the list)
Also, within the 9r151 folder, there is another folder called flashplayer9r151_winax (this is the folder to run to get flash working inside Internet Explorer (IE32) (also near the bottom of the list)
Note: these are two different folders here....one for FF and one for IE32
After installing both of these, restart the system again and upon opening both browsers, flash (version 9.0.151.0) should be working in both of these specific browsers

Again, the procedure above would need to be slightly modified for those people running X64 Vista and who want to use browsers other than FF or IE32.

So THATS it...
I too have had lockups. I actually did a clean reinstall of vista...twice,
and kept acting weird and freezing.
So its the flash...? They killed IE... Those bastards.
