Do you realize how much money companies would lose if DX10 cards wouldn't work with older games!!?!?!?!?! Look at DX9 cards, can they play DX8 games? There's your answer!
 
will you abosolutly need to buy a dx10 card to play next gen games or will i be able to play them with my 7900GT on medium or low graphics?

Most likely games in the foreseeable future with have a DX10 path and DX9 path. So, your DX9 card will play them fine, but DX10 cards might have a few extra visuals. It is pretty doubtful that game developers will just alienate you as soon as DX10 comes out.
