Have you looked at Ubuntu? It doesn't take anyone elite to run that. =)

PCLOS can be run by a complete moron.

I updated from XP Pro to Vista Home Prem. and am very pleased.
This on a Dell XPS 400 that I upgraded the vid card to a 1950 xt and added two gigs of ram and another hardrive.I did get the latest drivers for all my har ware before the upgrade.I find the os very stable and intuitive when adding hardware. It went out and found the latest drivers for my scanner(I forgot about it) and installed it with no problem. The scanner is a Canon LIDE 25.So to each his own, when the price got right for me($120 or so,I cant remember)I bought it.

Linux can't be elite anymore if even a complete noob like me can manage to edit the xorg.conf file to get the proper refresh rate 🙂

Heck, take even a less mainstream distro like DSL. Pop the CD in, and watch it load all the drivers on a 10 year old laptop in about 1 minute, out of the box. Hardest part about it is probably burning the ISO and even Nero does that decently this days.

I'm very happy with the ways things are shaping up in the linux world

I plan on buying Vista Home Premium or Business after SP1 is released, assuming its a smooth service pack. Seems most of my hardware has Vista drivers now, and most of my software is compatible.

I say why wait if you have drivers available for all your hardware? Vista is wayyyyyyyyy more stable than XP was before SP1 as long as your hardware and applications are all supported.

It looks like SP1 is mainly going to add support for Windows Home Server and make the changes Microsoft promised to make regulators in the US and the EU happy.

For me stuff like Superfetch make the Vista move worthwhile. I just built meself a new gaming rig and I feel as if XP just can't make the most of it. Case in point:

I leave it running with about ten apps (including Google Earth, Thunderbird, Firefox, audio editing program and IM). I make a quick trip to Blockbuster, come back 40 minutes later to find an unresponsive mess because everything has been moved to swap. :| Cute...I had over 1GB of free RAM left with all those apps open.

Granted, XP is 6 years old, and back when it came out, 256MB of RAM was considered a lot. But unused memory is wasted memory, and I didn't get it just for games. I want to use it , and I want my OS to make the best use of it as possible to make my computer as fast and responsive as possible, keeping HDD thrashing and swapping to a minumum, not just leave it there rotting in idleness. I'm looking forward to Vista and it's enhanced memory management, as well as an enhanced 3D desktop. Beryl has spoiled me! 🙂

In fact, I just bought Home Premium 64-bit, which I won't install yet. Now if only Line 6 could get their head out of their collective bungholes and create 64-bit drivers. 🙁

And on top of that the next release of Xorg is 100% dynamic so there goes that excuse...

The only way that would happen is if something was running while you were out killing your filesystem cache, XP doesn't dump things into swap for no reason and generally the only things to hit swap is the application data anyway.

theres a dozen opinion threads...why another?
since this topic has so many discussions already, you should ask yourself what goal your trying to achieve by making another useless negative thread.

theres a dozen opinion threads...why another?

What is the goal of your comment? Really please tell me and everyone else. This is a DISCUSSION forum. I thought i would give my opinion about Vista. Maybe someone would come up with a good reason to buy it now that I had not thought of. I know I am going to buy Vista one day. I just see no real good reason to buy it now. Also when I am going to upgrade my computer in about 6 months since the OEM cannot be carried over to a new computer. The only thing for me to buy now is the retail. I just do not currently see the point of spending that amount of money when I will experience some headaches with some of the software that I run. I never meant for this thread to be a negative hate thread.

lol, you mean you let others lead your opinion.

os is based on need and preference, only you can decide that. dont look into excuses to conclude a reason.

maybe this article will help you. a professional review on all the current mainstream OS's

Let me as this as a serious question: If I were to order Vista today what would be the best version to get if I plan on upgrading my computer in the next 6 months?

If budget isn't a concern, i'd suggest Vista Ultimate 64-bit retail.

Budget in mind, either Ultimate 64 or Premium 64.

Personally, i'd likely go OEM, since i don't feel there's anything wrong with switching what system i have it installed on, but that's something you can decide on the legality of for yourself.

Yes, i am suggesting the 64-bit versions, as honestly, 32-bit is a stopgap, a dead future...
