If you are going to get vista sooner or ater, and you got a chance to buy the brand new vista upgrade disk retail for 195 plus tax, would you do it?

hell no. even if it was given to me I'd still run XP or Linux. Vista so bloated and not worth it right now.

Vista is perfectly fine right now and doesn't need SP1 to be functional and stable. There are exceptions but if you poke around here and read the list of patches/hotfixes on vistasp1.net you should be able to find out if anything have will conflict with Vista.

And while I don't agree with elcamino74ss rather blunt comment about Vista being "bloated", I do agree that it's not something that you really need to spend money on. It has nice improvements but make sure it's worth it to you first.

If you have any other PCs you want to upgrade to Vista then MS has a "buy retail Ultimate and get up to 2 Home Premium upgrades for $50.00 each" deal going on. Either way it's a good price and I've had few problems with Vista (I had MANY more when XP first came out). I do wish I'd gotten it for $195.00 though :(

My 2 rusty pennies...

well, the way i figure is that the price of vista is not likely going to drop any time soon and 195 is the lowest price i have seen at retail so far, actually the 195 is from 25% off at compusa closeout sale, it "might" go down more but not sure. So even if i don't use it right away, buy it, then keep it sealed till sp1 come out. O and I build my own pc so unless i buy the oem, there is no other way for me to get vista cheap. I original intened to buy vista premium student edition but the dreamscene made me think otherwise.

So why not buy OEM? I bought Home Basic OEM for $92 and I'm quite happy with it.

Well, oem will tie the os to one machine. I would assume vista will last more than just a few yearsand i won't want to buy the os again when i rebuild my pc. Not to mention.. i don't think I will want vista basic.

Home Premium is the best choice for the vast majority of users out there. And I agree with you on the OEM vs Retail bit. I applaud you for wanting to stay legal and I think that in the long run Retail is the best choice so you're not tied to one motherboard.

Well i kinda have to agree if it wasn't for the DX10 i would stay with XP myself. I'm not a big fan of Vista thats why i'm holding off until i have too. i know it will be just a matter of time before i will have to switch over just not sure when

I really like Vista but for the time being, there's no reason to switch. When games really start utilizing DX10 is when I'll switch, plus I'll be building a new PC around that time anyway.

Comments like elcamino74ss' reminds me of when Xp came out. people were saying the same thing about Xp. I don't know why people even bother to post such comment. Bloated? Do you even know what you are talking about? In what way is Vista bloated compared to other operating system? As improvemnts/additions are made, of course the OS gets bigger.

Go back to Win 95 or even Win 3.1. That is the OS for you. It is not bloated, just to your liking.

I find Vista X64 HP to be very solid both in general use and gaming, sure you'll get a few people saying wait until SP1 is released, like that is going to make a big difference, bottom line keep your Vista updated ,and with regular drivers being released by both Nvidia and AMD/ATI ,video card issues are minor at present in my experience.

I personally prefer Home Premium over Ultimate, less bloated and has everything I need, however check the features that Ultimate offers before deciding which one is best for you ,regardless of price.

Sidenote :I can't wait until DX10 games arrive, this will silence some of the negative comments by XP users(especially since they will have no choice but to change over if they want DX10 gaming).

Well, think of it this way: You have $195 to spend on a computer upgrade. Do you really want to spend it on vista? Or would you prefer to buy 4 games, or the new MS Office 2007 suite and a game, or a new video card?

When I look at it that way, it's an easy decision to stick with XP.

Almost none, seeing as aside from Ultimate, the various versions are roughly equivalent to their XP counterparts.

Yes i am getting a new system within the next 2 weeks or so.. figuring out mb, vc's, procs.. the op.. totally not sure what to get.

none of the gaming i play right now needs vista. but on the other hand, since i am getting pretty decent parts, i want to be sure that the upgrade from windows xp(which i like, ok.. ok.. at least its stable) and later on getting vista.

and if i plan it out correctly, if i do get a mb that allows quad-procs, i would probably need/want 64bit.. (not sure which vista that is)(or even if i need it.. )

which is why i come here.. tons of knowledge from people who live for this comp stuff!!

Well of course its bloated every new OS is. As far as if I know what I'm talking about I've been using computers since the apple II and make a living working in IT. Obviously Vista is not some critical deal as most corporations don't even have Vista on the roadmap till 2008/2009.

In fact I'm upgrading my rig this week and still plan on sticking with XP Pro on it when I have a perfectly fine copy of Vista I could use.

No, wait till they force it down your throat which will be soon enough.

Vista has a new mentality that an unused computer is a wasted computer. Which works out very well compared to older versions of Windows that only used what they needed. While at first you might be skeptical (and I was too, a little) it only grows on you.

It's completely normal for a manufacturer to slowly phase out old products in favor of newer ones. Instead of trolling why don't you find a nice, sleek Linux distro that will keep you happy for years to come?

I was saying the same thing, until I had a major crash. I looked at reinstalling XPro and decided to go ahead with Ultimate instead, being that it had been out for a while. As it is I'm glad I made the jump. So far it's a fair sight ahead of where XPro was at the same point in it's development, and the things I want to run, do.

Is it worth $195? That depends on the OP's wants, needs and wallet weight. Was it worth it for me? Yup.

also, with dx 10 gaming approaching, vista will be needed. but then again i need to decide if i want to get the acd version of prenium for 70 for pay more for ultimate. The only reason why i even bother to think about ultimate is because of the Dreamscene. Is there any chance someoen goign to try to get it working on other version of vista as well?
