If you are blue screening during an upgrade it is almost certainly an XP driver that is being loaded that is not compatible with Vista. A blue screen is a kernel service failing or a bad driver. Vista has been out for six months now and the install portion of it has been run a bajillion times. The chances that you've stumbled into an undiscovered but are pretty slim.

Someone earlier mentioned removing and device related software. This is a good call. mobo monitoring software, nVidia drivers (the Vista drivers and XP drivers are *not* the same), any filter drivers (cd burners, antivirus). Remove the driver for any devices you don't need to get XP booted. You'll be getting all new drivers installed in Vista anyway and this isn't the same hassle as uninstalling/reinstalling programs or anything.

Sorry if I missed it earlier in the thread, but are you overclocking?

Hey everyone, I'm at work right now, and I'm going to be at a birthday dinner tonight...

But, I will say thanks for the help so far. I'm not overclocking, and I have never had memory issues (I did test the ram a while back, after I got it).

I don't have raid settings enabled, I don't even install drivers for it.

I'll check those things out, though.

I'm guessing it's one of the 20 or so drivers I have installed... I may end up having to install a clean copy of windows and then Vista afterwards. Do you guys think it would be worth it to go 64 bit?

I've heard about this BSOD problem from several other people. I don't think they got the upgrade to work, they needed to do a clean install. I paid for the upgrade, I can't purchase another license, and I wont! :p

Anyways, I'll probably be away from my computer until Tuesday afternoon. I'll keep you updated, thanks a lot everyone.

It would not be necessary to purchase another license to do a full installation. Simply do a clean install without your product key then repair install it with your product key. This was mentioned already earlier in the thread.

As long as you own a valid copy of XP you are perfectly legal.

So this process would go as follows..?
1: install xp pro w/sp2
2: run upgrade software for vista
3: select custom install or upgrade? - which one?
4: don't enter cd key, just install the correct version (in my case, ultimate)
5: activate with cd key later

Right?

Right?

In your situation the procedure would be:
1. Backup everything.
2. Pop your Vista CD in and boot the computer.
3. Select a Custom, full install, not upgrade. Format if you wish (I would personally). Select the version that your key corresponds to (Ultimate for you, right?)
4. When prompted for your product key leave it blank.
5. Install finishes and you'll have a full install but it will be eval.
6. Boot your Vista CD again.
7. Repair the existing installation and this time provide your product key when prompted.
8. Activate sometime within the grace period.

You'll now have a full, clean, non-eval, non-upgrade installation.

Note: XP CD not required during this process as it was in previous Windows upgrades.

Search the 'net a bit if you would like I'm sure someone has a very detailed step by step with screenshots and all that.

Waiiit. So I can boot from the disk? No way. Screw 32 bit, I'm going 64.

I thought you still had to do a upgrade, or a new install from INSIDE XP or 2000. I didn't know the disks were boot-able.

Nice. Thanks.

Alright, I got it installed using the full install trick with the upgrade dvd.

I installed the 64-bit version. Yeah yeah, I know, bad idea. I actually don't mind, much. The drivers will get better, anyway.

My sound card works great (the x-fi fatal1ty xtremegamer), and I got a score of 4.5 total for my performance. Aero is super pretty, and it's pretty much ran smooth as butter so far.

Thanks for the advice everyone, it helped a lot. :)

64bit is the only way to do Vista IMO. Mostly everything works fine, things that don't are extremely minor.
