So far in two games (EVE and Dawn of War 2. ) but i'd be willing to bet others as well...

Symptoms:
Everything's smooth, until an apparently random amount of time into the game when suddenly performance drops like i'm running a 10 year old PC. This lasts just a few seconds, but performance from then until I restart the app is unacceptably sluggish. Like a hurdler smashing his shin into a hurdle and only managing a limp from then on....

Any ideas??

Both games run fine on a Windows XP Pro machine.

i've got Vista64 Ult and i've had no problems with my games (TF2, L4D, WoW, WAR)

could be that your antivirus is kicking off a scan

No antivirus installed unless there's some vista antivirus i'm not aware of...i'm very careful about which sites i visit and nothing else seems to be effected, just games. Maybe i should try the hardware on the XP PC.

You mentioned WoW...man, that game runs literally twice as well on a lesser XP machine: 5400+ am2, 8800gts, 3gb ram vs the one in my sig. At the same settings the XP machine runs it 60+fps, the Vista @ under 30fps...

Cant really help you without any other details. You might try checking out your TaskManager, and see if anything is using a lot of CPU.

Also, what kind of PSU do you have?

In this day in age, with processors having multi-cores, and being as fast as they are, and with AV software being as optimized as it is, you are pretty much just peeing into the wind by not having some AV software installed.

finally, (kinda off-topic) i've got an e8500, ati4870, 4gb, 23"(1920x1200) and WoW is pretty consistent about staying at 60fps...if i head into an overly populated area, it may drop down to around 45fps. I haven't really noticed any difference between my system when it was XP vs Vista...however, i play all my games with vsync enabled
