Microsoft is preparing new service packs for Windows Vista and its server counterpart, Windows Server 2008. The pair of service packs, according to sources, will likely land before the release of Windows 7 which is set to debut in late 2009 or early 2010. Microsoft confirmed that the project was in the works, with a Vista spokesman saying, "Microsoft is working on a second Windows Vista service pack (Windows Vista SP2) and will share more details in the coming months."

Microsoft is remaining tight-lipped about the server SP2 as well, except to acknowledge that its coming soon. A Microsoft spokesperson stated, "[The] comment [on Vista] serves for Windows Server as well; Microsoft is not commenting further on the timing/release plans for the WS08 SP2 at this time, but will share more details in the coming months."

The Beta 1 releases for the two SP2s are expected within the next couple months. This will put some pressure on Microsoft's developer team to quickly complete the service pack, as the Windows 7 Beta 1 is slated for mid-December release.

It is rumored that Microsoft may be including some aspects of Windows 7's functionality into Vista via the new service packs.

Ars Article Apparently, mostly about Windows Server 2008 according to them. I'm hoping Windows Client is slated to receive at least one feature worth getting excited about.

Bah they should just release Windows 7 and abandon this vista abomination of a operating system. Its was a big blunder on MS to relase such a crappy OS. Give us Windows 7 already so we can start working the bugs out sooner. Vista into the fire where yee belongs. LOL

Nothing wrong with Vista ,very good OS IMHO,what makes you think Windows 7 will be perfect on release and bug free anyway?

Vista is just another OS like XP,2K etc....its like the others not perfect but gets the job done,if you have problems then obviously its your user skills, maybe you should stick to a console and stay away from something too advanced for you like Windows Vista.

Basically nothing really wrong with Vista nowadays except for a lot of FUD spread by some users.

We go through these same comments every single time MS releases a new OS. Every single time.

When XP first came out, people complained how much more bloated it was then 2k or 98. Today, XP is championed, by the ignorant masses, for its lightness and efficiency when compared to Vista. This is, despite Vista's improved performance, stability, and security.

When Windows 7 is release, I'd predicted many times that people will start championing Vista for its efficiency and lightness when compared to the bloatedness of Windows 7.

On a side note, I've been running Vista 64 since Oct 2007 and the only issue I've encountered is that 4GB install problem, which was resolved in SP1. My disk is preSP1, unfortunately. Fortunately, reinstalling Vista isn't something that needs to be done frequently.

I remember 2K users bashing XP when it was new,I agree you'll get same people having a bash at Windows 7 when it finally arrives.

Problem is XP was designed for hardware back in 2001,Vista is designed for today, they don't realize that, every OS Microsoft has made has required better hardware, now if I really wanted to complain about any Windows including Windows XP I would bitch and say how low DOS 6.22 needed both in ram and space compared to ANY Microsoft Windows OS,we move with the times but unfortunately some people don't and just like to complain and spread FUD.

It's in my opinion that a good deal of the blame belongs to Apple in this case. They have run a very effective anti-Vista campaign - people hate Vista and they don't know why.

Request: can the anti-vista people dig up one of the bajillion 25 page threads about the topic instead of sending this thread into the toilet? Thanks.

Back to the subject at hand, I welcome a SP2 before Windows 7 and I honestly don't know if I'm up for upgrading my three systems since Vista is so stable and reliable.

My main interest in 7 now revolves around what versions they'll offer (I have a hunch there will only be three, home, business and ultimate [they've had many complaints about the Vista model]) and how much the upgrade options are going to be. I don't want to spend too much money upgrading my machines and frankly, I see myself taking my time to go to 7 since Vista works so well for me now.

I guess whether I jump to 7 depends on the UI refinements and features. Fundmentally, Vista and 7 will have pretty much the same underpinnings, same driver model, etc. The UI improvements will have to be too good to pass up for me to feel strongly about upgrading. I like what I see so far, but I'm treading water and treating this as a minor release, like OSX tiger/leopard, etc.

I take it when Windows 7 arrives 2009/2010 we can expect Windows 8 around 2012/2013?..Which in theory is only going to be available in 64 bit format ,as to Windows 7 I don't know if I'm going to try it unless I need an OEM copy for a motherboard upgrade(normally curisoity gets the better of me when a new OS is released)...I'll definetly be buying Windows 8 down the road which is a bit of a wait(hopefully worth it).

The main problem with Vista I see nowadays(apart from FUD) is some manufacturers have been very lazy with drivers, fortunately most manufacturers have released decent driver support for Vista, hopefully with Windows 7 coming down the road Vista driver support will just continue to improve.

I too look forward to SP2 for Vista,my two Vista PCs have no issues but its always nice to see support/updates etc... for any OS or software that you use,as we know some companies are better then others when it comes down to customer support (unfortunately for some).

I wonder if they will have anti- Windows 7 campaign too?..Only time will tell.

Go to any forum or message board where Windows Seven is the subject and you can see the FUD machine already rolling. The fact that Windows Seven has Vista as it's foundation has already upset certain segments of Microsoft haters.

Ironically Vista was the first OS from MS that I legally purchased... I personally think it was well worth it (then again I didn't use it until SP1 was released). I think it's pretty snazzy :) And yeah, I have a mac two... and yeah there are features that I would like to see in vista. But you know what... there are features that I would like to see in Leopard too... nothing is perfect... at least it's not Windows ME...

I see there is still a handful of dumbasses out there who display the Vista hate. Better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and confirm it.

Umm, Vista SP2 beta? I think that's a lie or you downloaded something that likely isn't SP2. I generally don't advise people download things like this for obvious reasons.

Mike Nash, Windows Vista Blog
As a part of the development and testing process, we're going to start by providing a small group of Technology Adoption Program customers with Windows Vista SP2 Beta for evaluation next Wednesday, October 29.

SP2 Changes:

Windows Vista SP2 adds Windows Search 4.0 for faster and improved relevancy in searches.

Windows Vista SP2 contains the Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack supporting the most recent
specification for Bluetooth Technology.

Ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista.

Adds Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi Configuration.

Windows Vista SP2 enables the exFAT file system to support UTC timestamps, which allows correct file synchronization across time zones.

Obvisouly there will be more but this isn't a major update.
