You should already have all of the fixes not unique to SP1 which apply to your installation via Windows Update. There are some hotfixes which MS doesn't release through Windows Update but they usually only affect the minority of customers.

guys, let me know if installting SP1 RTM deactivates your license as I do not want to waste my $400 retail copy of vista. Just want to be sure .... :)

Ok I'm confused.

Yes,
I know WGA sucks,
I know WGA makes mistakes and says valid licenses aren't,
but most commonly, even if installing SP1 somehow corrupted your activation status, or even if your HDD crashed and you had to reinstall / reactivate, generally you should be able to reactivate the same key on the same machine without an unusual amount of difficulty (which is NOT to excuse the USUAL amount of difficulty they inflict on their customers).

SP1, AFAIK, DOES have things inside it to DEACTIVATE (or at least DISABLE) things like the OEM preactivation / fake OEM BIOS hacks, stop grace timer hacks, etc. It probably also blacklists a bunch of known compromised OEM or other keys I'd guess.

So basically if you KNOW you're running a version that was hacked to prevent your needing to activate it, or with a hacked key, yes, installing SP1 may 'deactivate' a previously working system.

Otherwise the worst that'd likely happen is that SP1 is unstable on your system, it crashes your hard drive, you lose your time / data, but -- don't panic, you can be reassured that you can always REINSTALL GENUINE MICROSOFT WINDOWS VISTA, reactivate, be WOWed by the great new experience, and enjoy all the advantages of running a fresh install of your WGA / DRM spyware while you have a few stiff drinks trying to forget all the data / money / time you lost due to their instability.

Personally I've been running SP1 RC0 X64 for a few weeks, and haven't had too many problems other than that subsequent updates don't work, and that VISTA is.....VISTA. Oy.

Personally if I was going to have lots of PAIN and LOSS if SP1 hosed my system / activation / whatever, I'd spend $99 on a 2nd hard disk, ghost my full partition(s) onto the backup drive, THEN install SP1.

huh? I've seen office XP or 2003 used to deactivate itself if you install it prior to the release date, I am not sure whether it will blacklist your key - it depends on what type of license you have. Right now I have Ultimate x64 retail with SP1 RC but I want to be completely sure about this before installing SP1 RTM.

I wish that were so, but It doesn't seem that way from the following document. It looks like there are TONS of MAJOR problems that can affect virtually anyone with VISTA (e.g. problems with USB, sleep/hibernate, media center, audio, networking, drivers, etc...) with very mature hotfixes that have been out for months, but those hotifixes aren't available for dowload or via WU.

Installing SP1 is the ONLY (AFAIK) way to get these and dozens of other effectively essential fixes that make the difference between VISTA being categorically unusable (even relative to XP's feature set) versus it
being MAYBE usable.

Thus it's a slap in the face to all their paying customers that they'd withhold not JUST SP1, but ALSO all the hundreds of hotfixes that've been released for months previously.

Hotfixes and Security Updates included in Windows Vista Service Pack 1
Microsoft Corporation
Published: December 2007
Abstract
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 includes all previously released updates for Windows Vista. Many of these updates are available to the public on the Microsoft Download Center and Windows Update, while others are only available to specific customers or partners. It is standard practice to include all of these updates in a Service Pack and as such they are included in Longhorn.

...which lists the VAST MAJORITY of hotfixes in SP1 (as of the RC0 timeframe when that document was published) as "Publically Available: NO" status. These are HUNDREDS of hotfixes, and comprise well over 90% of SP1's total content.

I really can't fault MS for not releasing sp1 to the public.

If they release it and some people have driver issues, forums will be flooded with post "How can they call this a service pack, it screwed up my pc, blah blah blah"

Even if they put a disclaimer, there will still be those that complain "yeah , they warned me but still......"

Its the 'point finger at anyone else but me' mindset.

edit:

And I still can't find a comprehensive list of the actual drivers causing problems with sp1.
If you found it on technet, please post the url. I got tired of searching the site.

Your good.
No need to worry.

I've been reading forums dedicated to vista 'hacks' and its so funny.
You got people that are so desperate they are flashing their bios's with modified ones so they can run vista without paying for it. Lots of people there are screwing up their motherboards to the point they have to rma them, just to run vista for free.

seems to go to a file that contains among other things...:
"...
6.0.6001.17028 (lh_core2_spinstall(ghilios).070607-1802)
..."

...which one might naively assume means that it's build 17028 or 1802.

Since I've heard comments about ....1840 being obsolete and 2040 being
the real RTM build, I'm suspicious that aforementioned link isn't RTM.
As it stands, anything with 6.0.6001.18000 as a version number is most certainly intended as a RTM build. Whether it is or not the actual final build, it's something Microsoft intended to ship and is of shipping quality (any further bugs notwithstanding). Now there have been rumors that the 2040 sub-build is the final SP1, however no one has been able to prove this. What we do know is that this is the version number of a number of SP1-related tools, and the version number of Windows Server 2008, which uses the same kernel. It is exceedingly likely that this is the real SP1.

There are hundreds of fixes available, whether they apply to you or not is debatable. If you had any serious problems using Vista, you would have reverted back to XP or got hold of the fixes through support.

Installing SP1 is the ONLY (AFAIK) way to get these and dozens of other effectively essential fixes that make the difference between VISTA being categorically unusable (even relative to XP's feature set) versus it being MAYBE usable.

Now you're exaggerating.

I am getting ready to install a RTM of Vista x64 I downloaded off msdn, the version number is 6001.18000.080118-1840, md5 sum for the file is
e4ce0b193d94279e4dce1098d6b5afeb

There is a slight bug in the build and thats where the 2040 number came from.
On the msdn forums I read a post where one person says they are going to release a new build, only to oem's with the fix that will be 2040 and another person who says no they are sticking with 1840 and just going to make it a knowledge base entry.

Well after a couple hours of major frustration I managed to get all my hardware installed.
Surprisingly it did Bsod on me once while doing a driver install.

It did not like my tv tuner card, a leadtek winfast, and on install it bsod with a page fault .
It took a couple hours to find the problem and it was driver related so I can't blame vista directly.

Leadtek had a bad address setting in the inf file that caused the problem.
I sent leadtek all the info and the crashdump so hopefully they will pull the drivers and correct it.

Otherwise its running well. I got it set up with dual monitors, with tv on the second monitor and the tv tuner output actually looks better in vista than it did in xp x64.

Its still in the testing stage for me, I'm not ready to put it on all the other pc's just yet.

Windows Update NEVER installs Hotfixes. Hotfixes have had limited testing and should only be installed when the problem they solve is worth the risk of installing the hotfix.

When you install a RTM Service Pack, it's a (hopefully) fully-tested package that includes many changes, that, among other things, incorporate fixes for the problems that the Hotfixes "fixed" temporarily.

I installed and used SP1 RC1 for over a month. It definitely speeded things up in Vista.

Now, to be ready for the RTM version, I uninstalled RC1 according to instructions. It is a lengthy process - took almost an hour to complete all phases and stages with reboots.

But - we're now ready for RTM and will not hesitate to get it through Windows Update when the time comes.

As for "sleep," . . . I have always regarded it as an abomination. :)

Man, I can't imagine using a laptop without sleep. I have a Thinkpad t61p and x61t as well as a Dell d620 and they all go into and come out of sleep super fast. I spend a lot of time going to different offices in DC, so when I pack up, I just close the lid, shove it in my bag and go. When I get to the next place, I open it up and I'm back where I was before. They all generally sleep in 5 seconds or less and wake up in 5-10.

The only time I reboot is for Patch Tuesday and the occasional app install the requires a reboot. I hate rebooting. And hibernating (with 4GB of RAM) :)

I'm the same, Stash. I do it with all my desktop machines and am slowly convincing everyone else I know to do it too. It saves quite a bit of power when you have a few boxes around and they're smart enough to sleep and hibernate automatically.

I like to set my machines to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity and hibernate after 1 hour. Fortunatley, none of my machines have issues sleeping and waking up properly. It's nice lining up a few encodes or downloads or something and going to bed knowing that the box will be off and cold when everything is done.

In the BIOS, setting wake options to "any key" if possible is great too. I just tap the spacebar and in a couple seconds I'm right where I was. I love only rebooting once a month.
