See that was the problem link

The download servers on their website were getting overloaded and they even mention they may have to take it off because of their servers getting to much traffic lol.

The download links don't go anywhere. They just redirect me back to the main page.

They took them offline because the server was getting way to hammered. The forum post by bios shows this.

They were up yesterday and this was the only place to get the 64 bit version of windows vista final sp1. Was anyone else able to get it?

Its good they stopped distributing it considering its the wrong one.
MS pulled the 1840 build, there were some problems that shouldn't have been in the RTM build.

2040 build is the new RTM
Now I got to download vista x64 all over again. grrrr

Looks like I'll be reinstalling soon. (damn you, vlite!) Any chance MS is going to put up a slipstreamed install dvd?

Only thing I see so far is the RTM and OEM version .
From everything I have read there will be no slipstreamed install dvd.

Your screenshot says "release candidate," so won't it be time-limited like the other RC's?

convert24's screenie is for 'SP1 Refresh 2', so called...

That's the same version of SP1 that I'm running.

Here's a SYS INFO SCREENSHOT for you... ;)

Truthfully, I cannot imagine there being a lot of difference between 'Refresh 2' and 'RTM'...

'Refresh 2' works great, so I'm in no hurry!

If I run across the 'RTM' version, fine, but no biggy... :)

WinVistaForums.com's explanation seems pretty straightforward. Whatever they are hosting is a non-official release of SP1, they are hosting it without Microsoft's permission, and they state that installing it may violate the EULA.

"Windows Vista Service Pack 1 has been released to manufacturing, meaning all code has been finished. It will not be available to customers until March.

We must strongly note that using this file may violate the End User License Agreement from Microsoft. According to the EULA for Windows Vista Service Pack 1, you must download this file only from officially authorized Microsoft servers. This download is NOT being hosted on an official Microsoft server or officially authorized Microsoft redistributor. Therefore, you may void your license agreement with Microsoft by applying this official copy of the Service Pack, even though we have 100% tested and confirmed through analysis that this is the authentic final release and contains no malware, trojans, spyware, or other malicious content. The executable files in this archive are digitally signed and contain authentic security certificates from Microsoft."

I think it's hilarious that people are willing to download a torrent of a service pack. Aside from the obvious risk of trojans/malware, etc, what the hell is the freaking rush? The RC was available for weeks for anyone who was interested. This obsessive need to download the final bits seems a bit overanxious. Just take a deep breath and the final bits will be out before you know it.

Yeah. I DREAD Service Packs. They are nothing but extra work for me. I can certainly wait until they're available on a CD or on Windows Update, have been tested by many OTHER people, and the "fixes" for the problems created by the Service Pack have been documented.

I agree
It really makes vista look bad.
You have vista users desperate for the service pack like its going to make there pc run 100% faster, or its going to give them 20fps more in all their games.

Its a service pack, its mainly bug fixes.
Its not the second coming :)

I'm running 'Refresh 2' now and it's okay, however...

I had problems with the icons in the Notification Area when I installed 'Refresh 1' (which everyone poo-poo'ed) :D

Soooo, it's interesting (to me) that this icon problem cropped up again in the 'Final' version...

LoL!

You know what?

I have a *feeling* this is NOT going to be the 'Final' version... ;)

I agree!

Brilliant move on MS's part, though - releasing the betas to the public! They incited a riot...

LoL!

A couple of month's ago, everyone thought Vista was 'Complete Crap', now they're desperate to brag about being the first-on-the-block with Service Pack 1... :D

Bah.

What's the latest credible build # that anyone has gotten from whatever source?

The x64 link on the page
http://winvistaforums.com/blog...p1-upgrade.html?page=2
seems to go to a file that contains among other things...:
"...
6.0.6001.17028 (lh_core2_spinstall(ghilios).070607-1802)
..."

...which one might naively assume means that it's build 17028 or 1802.

Since I've heard comments about ....1840 being obsolete and 2040 being
the real RTM build, I'm suspicious that aforementioned link isn't RTM.

This is really maddening, I couldn't care less about the rolled up SP1, all I want are the historically released security patches and hotfixes that ARE all now officially released ones. But apparently those aren't easily to be found (windows update does NOT install all of the ones documented to exist AFAICT).

And to add insult to injury if you've installed the RC1 or other prerelease SP1 versions you're *prevented* from getting *new* Windows Update patches for subsequently released security updates, so in that way you're LESS secure running SP1-RCx than if you were just running WU'ed Vista RTM. But you can't sensibly run Vista RTM + WUs because lacking the hundreds of hotfixes it's basically unusably badly broken in functionality.

Thanks, Microsoft, another dissatisfied customer; I'm sure "WOWed" that I've spent hundreds of dollars and hours on Vista since one year ago and STILL can't even get all the CURRENTLY RELEASED fixes you've had kicking around for MONTHS, but sit waiting for another MONTH for you to deign to dole out the patches.

FYI, dear MS, in the time I've bee waiting for my couple copies of Vista to become semi-usable / secure / patched, I've deployed SEVERAL new LINUX boxes which I now wouldn't even CONSIDER Vista on (given this whole mess / bad EXPERIENCE), and 100% LINUX is looking better and better of an option for all my needs every passing day. Just thought you'd like to know.
