So I have RC2 here but haven't installed it yet.

I was wondering how long it can stay on my system before I will be forced to upgrade to RTM.

will I receive updates for it?

You won't be force to upgrade, it will just stop working.

May 31st 2007 is the date for ALL pre-release versions of Vista, no matter what build, no matter what date you installed.

You mean will there be any available? Pre-release copies of Windows are not supported whatsoever, so highly unlikely.

Now I don't know if WU/AU/MU will be able to distinguish between RTM and pre-release versions, but it probably will. The betas really aren't intended to be run past RTM, they're for finding bugs and testing.

Actually I think that security updates will be available but that's about it.

They said in a press release that security updates will be available for RC1+ until RTM.

After RTM they can (and rightfully should) close down support for the pre-release builds.

As stash has mentioned, it will stop working.

So, how can you get security updates for your pre-RTM operating system, if it fails to log in?

I'm sure it will act like Windows XP does if you don't have it activated after a certain time: "log in, but Windows logs you right back out" effect

You won't be able to get security updates. It's a Beta and Microsoft didn't intend for people to keep using it as a primary OS.

In order for this statement to be meaningful, someone will have to define RTM. I don't think they mean October 25, when the actual Release to Manufacturing is scheduled to occur. They could mean sometime in November, when Dell starts shipping systems with Vista loaded. But more likely, they mean February, when Vista hits the shelves at BestBuy.

After which a RTM build will be released as the last one for the CPP, and that will have full support until something like June of 2007.
