And we'll be using something newer and you'll be yawning and telling us Windows 7 or 8 is either too spendy or too bloated, right? :D

Vista Ultimate is still overpriced compared to Vista Premium! Let me know when it's $169.

Good move by Microsoft, however I still feel there are too many versions of Vista available, reminds me of video cards in the old days ie.. there was only one model and now so many to choose from.

Good luck with XP forever then... ;)

I saw Vista Home Basic for $49, a couple of weeks ago - probably still on sale.

Vista HB is pretty much the same as XP, sooooo... ;D;

European anti-trust and foreign language versions aside...

Vista comes in 6 flavors:

  1. 1. Vista Starter Edition - stripped down version of HB for Turd World countries - think demo.

    2. Vista Home Basic Edition - think Windows XP Home.

    3. Vista Home Premium Edition - functionally equivalent to Windows XP MCE, except Vista HP works!

    4. Vista Business Edition - equivalent to XP Pro.

    5. Vista Enterprise Edition - for big enterprises where data protection is paramount.

    6. Vista Ultimate Edition - all Windows Vista features in one package.
Which one(s) would YOU do away with?

I'm thinking about it for my next build. The benefits may outweigh the extra cost, like being able to move my OS to new system.

All of them except for Home Premium and Ultimate except renaming Ultimate to Enterprise since the Ultimate name is pretty lame.

Actually I'd probably get rid of them all except for Ultimate, artificial limitations built into software just to make you pay for the next version up is extremely lame.

Apple does OSes right in terms of selection/pricing.

One version only, with the option for Family Pack licensing (5 computers per household).

I'd like to see Vista Ultimate only, at a much lower price, as it'll scale down Aero etc. anyway for lower end systems.
Oh, & multi-PC use for a small amount more as an option.

Actually I am lucky that my co. pays for my MSDN Universal account, so I get all the OSs for "free". I have XP on one machine and Vista Ultimate x64 on another at work, both for software dev and testing. I much prefer XP as a dev platform, but Vista isn't too terrible. Again, even though they are all free to me, I develop on XP, test on Vista.

Still, I think the retail prices of the Vista variations is just too much compared to the cost of a Linux distro or Mac OS X. Vista would take off if Microsoft started offering "family" licenses (3-5 licenses/keys with a single install CD) for a reasonable price. A lot of people I know have 2, 3, maybe even 4 or 5 systems in their homes now.

Enjoying that now with my recent new build. See sig. Sys #1 inherited a retail copy of Vista Business from system #2. Was a good opportunity for me to buy a Home Premium license for #2.

In effect they do! Anyone can subscribe to Microsoft TechNet and for $350 you can download just about all Microsoft major products, OS's and apps, and get legal keys to all, and each can be installed on up to 10 machines.

Example, I have Vista Ultimate (2), XP Pro (2), Office 2007 Pro (3) plus all SPs for $350, on 4 systems. That averages out to a decent cost per system. And a second year renewal is even better - only $250.

Google for MS TechNet.

Yeah, but then folks would complain that Ultimate was "bloatware".

A lot of us felt this way when MS first leaked the Vista version list. It was always tough enough explaining the differences between XP Home and XP Pro.

The only thing that's improved is that you can easily and legally upgrade from Vista Home Premium (which is SO common on store-bought PCs) to Vista Ultimate. This lets homeowners and small businesses who bought Vista Home Premium can easily upgrade to Ultimate if they need a missing feature.

They already do. But if MS would make the system more modular so that you could actually remove what you don't want everyone would be happier and they'd likely end up with a more robust system.
