I can't understand why it keeps doing this... I tried setting it to "Never" turn the hard drive off under ANY of the three Power Plans whether it's on battery or AC power. That didn't work, it still turned it off... so I set the time limit to 999 minutes before turning the hard drive off, and it still does it sooner. Anyone else have this problem? Is it a known issue? How about a fix/workaround?

I have not seen this issue.

Are you sure you're using the power plan that you've modified?

Might also want to check for BIOS hard drive settings (common on laptops), BIOS updates and driver updates for your hard drive controller.

Doh!

Never had this problem so far. My only gripe about the new power setting is the inability to turn off hibernation from the control panel. You would have to turn it off from command prompt.

Thats my guess...bios setting could be overriding vista.

The same thing I was thinking also. Check your BIOS ACPI settings.

I had this issue with RC1 as well. And it wasn't a BIOS thing either, it's Vista. This never occurred on XP. It would shut my secondary hard drive off all the time, and then it would need to access it and turn it back on. This was causing a vicious cycle of my hard drive whining as it turned back on. Very annoying, and not very good for the hard drive to be turning off and on constantly. I never did find out how to fix it, and now I'm on a new system with one hard drive.

I've also had this happen with my secondary hard drive.

OP: Did you go under advanced power options and tell it to never turn off your hard disk, and also tell it never to go to sleep? Otherwise I'd try changing the power profile to max performance if you haven't already.

I still don't have it working corrrectly. In fact, the hard drive is off right now as I came back from getting a drink, and I have every Power Plan set to never turn the hard drive off.

I checked BIOS settings and there's nothing in there in reference to turning the hard drive off.

Selecting the Max Performance Power Plan prevents the processor from stepping down to a slower speed, no matter what I set that option to.

I'm going to be attending a Windows Vista launch party at Cobo Hall in Detroit on Tuesday. I'm going to try to bring this up with someone there.
