Vista or XP

I got a laptop for college, and the laptop comes with XP pre-installed as well as an installation CD for Vista Ultimate 32bit.

Since I'm going into Comptuer Engineering, I'm concerned with compatibility issues I may have with Vista and some of the software I'll be using for college. Of course, I guess I could always use the lab or something if I was having problems..

My question is, should I bite the bullet and upgrade to Vista? My system also came with an XP install disc, so I guess I could revert back if I ever needed to.

Your advice is appreciated.

I'd stick with XP for now and see how it goes. Be sure to have a way to make ongoing backups of important data. Way too many folks post here asking how to get their term papers back.

Fresh install (not upgrade) Vista, and then setup virtualbox, or virtual pc and run xp in a virtual machine.

Just dual boot both.

I looked this up and this idea seems pretty solid.

As for dual booting, I was going to but I found problems with partitioning my HDDs set up in RAID. Programs like Gparted wouldn't recognized the RAID array and ended up only seeing two hard drives of unallocated space.
