Vista nonsense

It's not the first time that i hear people say stuff like that, here on the forum or elsewhere.

I was just talking to someone who had a X4200+, a X1800XT and 2 (TWO) GB of memory and thinks he can not run VIsta. Thinks he needs 4GB 🙂

Sorry..that's utter nonsense.

If i have time i might do some testing and tweaking and a detailed mem-usage test.... but vista does NOT use that much memory as myths say...1GB would be doable to "run" vista and of course a X4200 or even my old A64 3500 (ok, overclocked) are plenty. I agree tho that for serious gaming i'd recommend 2GB.

Please you dont need an A64 to run vista; it will run just fine (albeit everything turned down) on an "old" Athlon Thunderbird of Williamette. Hell you dont even need 1Gig. Obviously most of us would want that (and most have that) but I believe MS said the min specs (as far as RAM are concerned) are 512Mb with all the features turned off.

But it should be able to run on a Pentium 2 with 64MB of RAM. Other PC OSs can do it, why not Windows?

If I bought Vista and I found it used anywhere near 512MB with no programs running I would be fvcking apoplectic.

Yes, an OS, despite any advances in technology, should never used 514MB of RAM

Uhm....look...my XP uses 350 or something and i switched off as good as anything i dont need, highly tweaked.

Vista has more features..starting from running spyware scanner, new search features, the windows manager....etc..etc....and then 150MB more for all this is not even unrealistic.

People want MORE features...but then complain that "mysteriously" the more features also use more memory.

It's like going out buying a hummer or high-end SUVfor more horsepower, and then complaining that it has a higher MPG than a toyota 🙂

What does "uses XYZ of ram" mean ?

This statement doesnt make any sense if you dont know about the internal memory handling of Vista - and i know they changed stuff there too !

From what i know the memory-manager/caching etc. has been rewritten and improved....in other words it COULD as well use 512MB but the caching could be very effective...eg. unused stuff swapped out to HD etc..etc.

Looking at the plain usage for a moment doesnt really say how effective it handles memory.

Mine uses 146MB with nothing running. I could get it down further.

What I'm talking about is a minimal install. I can't cut windows down for a low power system. When support for old MS OSs run out you have 2 choices - run with no support or buy a more powerful system.

I have 4GB of RAM, and Vista (RC2 x64) uses near 1GB upon booting. As long as it's doing some caching with all of that RAM and not wasting it (1GB is way too much even for all the new features that were added), I don't mind.

Finally!

Someone that understands that unused memory is wasted memory. Ideally your OS should use every bit of memory in your box at all times. It should be pre-caching everything it can to be more responsive. Memory needed for something else can be freed in the blink of an eye.

If vista could chew up all 4GB at boot without letting hdd activity slow anything down you were trying to do that would be ideal.
