Vista minor annoyances?

Not a Vista bashing thread...

For the most part, Vista seems to run fine. But so far I've run into two minor annoyances that are buggin the heck outta me.

1) A lot of settings don't get saved: This ranges from things like folder views to mouse sensitivity.

2) When I have Desktop Composition enabled (Vista glass effect) and I load up a webpage like Yahoo's frontpage, everything gets delayed! This effects all windows I have open! My typing is catching up with me, and the scrolling is insanely choppy. When I then proceed to drag a window, it then makes everything smooth until I load another page...

Perhaps other people can throw in what they've experienced so we can create a reference. I will add more if I notice more.

Edit: Perhaps this could turn into a Vista support thread.

I wonder what the root cause of your issues are. I'm not seeing those issues at all (folder settings, mouse (though I am using Logitech's Setpoint to manage mouse settings currently). The #2 issues is odd as well. I have a somewhat similar setup (E6600, 8800GTX, 2 gb DDR 2 ram, etc) and I use yahoo as my start page, but as soon as I load either IE or FireFox the page loads instantly and I'm off to typing. I'm also what my friends describe as a "tab whore" and have any number from 5-25 tabs up and running at a single time.

My only annoyance with Vista is when I access the "Computer" option from within an application (NOT the OS itself), my HD spins up louder and noticeably slower. It's odd and starting to frustrate me. WinXP did it as well, but did so w/in the OS.

Good luck on your issues, maybe the rumored SP1 will address some of the concerns you have.

my issues with Vista:

> RIDICULOUS: multiple files selected disables security tab

> super annoying problems with vista not remembering individual folder view settings (eg: if you need to have one dir sorted by name and another by 'date modified')

> need new audio card so i can get hardware audio normalizer working again
(but thats creative's fault for not releasing drivers)

so for now, back to my previous OS which does what i need done.

I still don't like the way network connections/VPNs are managed compared to XP...that's pretty much it.

for some reason, I get an error every time bittornado closes, as if the program crashed (it didn't).

When saving files off the web using IE7, the File Save As directory doesn't stay set to the last directory I navigated to, instead it resets to my user directory every time, requiring re-navigation of the
filesystem for every file I save.

When clicking what used to be a directory-hierarchy-list drop-down in XP (on the File Save As dialog), Vista instead seems to treat it as a location MRU bar, but only for entries I've typed in. Very annoying.

Folder view settings drive me crazy, my biggest annoyance by far, bugs the crap out of me when my Windows folder, or the add/remove programs list insists on showing as large icons and I have to change them every time, I've tried everything to fix that.

My low score on the reliability monitor bugs me too, my system is incredibly stable, way more so than XP was. But I do a lot of experimenting, and overclocking and such, sometimes I screw up and it crashes, but I get a huge drop in the reliability monitor and it'll take a week to get back up. I've tried to reset it, but despite my efforts all I have manged to do it delete the data, but not the graph.:(

A few times when I highlighted and then did shift+delete on a bunch of files, it DELETED THE WHOLE FOLDER.

When I arrange the icons on my desktop, it leaves the bottom-most row right above my taskbar empty.

I can't do an XP style copy where it would copy as much as possible then error out at the end when I filled up the destination.

My main issue with Vista is the ungodly amount of layering it uses to bury one's data files, and it doesn't like the user to change that. And, the file search function sucks compared to XP.

Otherwise, I love it! :)

Painfully slow copy times that require a a hotfix. At least there's a fix. Aside from that, I can't say I have any annoyances with Vista.

My only annoyance is all of the people complaining about it. That's not directed at this thread, just a comment in general.

Explorer. It is such a piece of crap. View settings do not get saved, full row selection which makes it harder to select multiple items within a large list, selecting items on the right pane sometimes doesn't work (left side is still selected) - I've lost entire directories to this bug when I just wanted to delete a few files (fortunately those were not important files), and did I mention the view settings DO NOT WORK?! I DON"T WANT THUMBNAILS. EVER. UNLESS I TELLL IT OTHERWISE. I WANT THE DETAILED VIEW. :| [pulling hair out] AAAAHH!!!! :|

I personally thought the file search was way better...way faster.

Is that caused by Vista??

No, but it only happened after installing Vista. I blame Creative actually.

What fix is this? One of the updates from MS or something else.

I will add my pet peeve to this - the lack of "file types" UI, especially for changing the command line arguments that certain file types should take.

annoying yes, however, I never used it much and I can still pop into the registry and generally do what it did.

You didn't read past the first sentence did you? :p I was talking about Windows Explorer, the file manager. That piece of software is an obvious step back from the previous windows versions.

IE7 I don't even want to bother with; too late too little, I'm already sold on FF.

1) no problem for me, all my preferences a kept even after reboot, did nothing special.

2) then you will need a better PC or a better video card, or more RAM

Now to add my Annoyance of Vista.....

Half cooked drivers with missing software support from Manufactures, and as you can see my Rig is state of the art, for My Requirements, as in for what i want to do with the machine.

TV/Record Play, DVD, Games, Home Entertainment, Server, etc, All in 1 shop.

And Vista is useless for me other than being a nice looking OS, since the software i really need to run, is not available yet in vista, needless to say the ones for XP does not work in Vista.

The OS itself is working fine (HP 64-bit).

Unfortunately my Line 6 guitar amp modeling hardware is not supported in Vista 64 (yet), forcing me to boot into XP now and then.

Other than that, I'm fine.
