Vista install problem

I posted about this months ago, I never figured out the problem but I'm thinking abou5t trying to get it going: This is a rundown of my problem and what I tried to fix it

new'ish box built Sept 07, MSI p35 Diamond MB
C2D 6550
Geforce 8600GT
2 gigs Crucial DDR2 (re bagged Balistix) running 2.2v (specs)
WD 500gb IDE HD.

XP was on the box, everything running fine. I ran Prime95 overnight, Memtest 86+ and a few other benchmark/stress tests with no errors. Ran Vista upgrade advisor, said no hardware compatibility issues. I bought OEM Vista Ultimate from Newegg, seemed to install normal, I was getting a BSOD that related a NTFS error, same spot always so I backed up my HD, formatted repartitioned and after a re-install it worked no problems there. But a new problem came up.

If I downloaded anything off the Internet as soon as it finished downloading I'd get a popup bubble telling me"[file name] s corrupt" sometimes I'd get MFT is bad, this happened always, reboot, same issues right away. I tried reinstallin Vista (64 bit) a few times, no luck. Borrowed a neighbors Vista (32 bit) used my key and exact same issue.

Tried it with driver out of the box, tried with official drivers from Nvidia, Intel, Creative. Didn't help. Tried a 2nd HD (IDE) and a 2nd IDE cable, no luck either.

All I can possible come up with is for some reason Vista doesn't like the IDE port, I don't want to go drop money on a SATA drive, but does anyone think this MIGHT fix the issue? I'm really grasping here, but I want to figure this out. Since I have tested the shit out of my hardware I wouldn't even know what to RMA. Everything runs 100% under XP.

Ideas? stumped here...

You have tried a lot of ideas so far, think I would get a PCI IDE controller and run the HD off that to see if it improved stability, make sure its Vista compatible.

wow a response sweet! 🙂 well if it is a problem with the onboard IDE, I figured I could walk a block to PC Club and buy a 10 dollar IDE to SATA converter, if Vista still screws up I can rule out IDE issue, and probably rule out SATA connector issue. I hope it's this, I don't care about IDE just had the drive when I built the PC and saw no reason to buy a SATA drive.

This is frustrating, I will post after I get it and reinstall Vista, hope it fixes it.
