Vista improved 3d performance

when I upped vista to 4gigs of ram performance on my vista partition jumped to withing 10 percent -ish- of my xp partition on some games. Drivers are much better and at this point I dont really think its graphics card drivers. I am a firm believer its bloat at the os level. Things need to be slimmed down like Randy Jackson in season 3 of idol.

I would say yes, vista should end up just as good at DX9 was XP is (if not better hopefully 🙂). As everyone else has pointed out, drivers are the main weakness in the loop.

i could be wrong about this, but i seem to recall that vista only emulates dx9. so that tells me that dx9 games wouldnt run faster on vista compared to xp.

No, on Vista DX9 is installed alongside DX10 so it retains native compatibility.

As for performance, in some high detail situations Vista is faster than XP for gaming.

Yes. I was shocked when I first experienced it. I feel both Oblivion and Company of Heroes (my current favorite games) smoother with 4GB of RAM on Vista.

I believe the dx9 performance in vista is about equal to xp, vista is a bit bloated but it handles large amounts of memory and dual core processes alot better then XP so I think it about evens out. Although with a few patches and better drivers im sure vista could pass up xp

really? i could have sworn i read something about it just being emulated in vista.

No, it's installed alongside DX10. You install DX9 onto Vista the same way as you do onto previous OSes.

If it was emulated the performance hit would be colossal.

Vista performance is fine for me.

I think there is still a common misconception that Vista is no where near XP performance. In my experience, Vista is very close and keeps getting closer with every driver release.

i agree, i've notice minimal difference in CS:S playability moving from XP SP2 32-bit to Vista 32-bit
