Vista Home Premium x64, XP Professional x64, or Server 2008 Standard x64?

Just want the best overall gaming performance. Have 8GB RAM so I can't use a 32-bit OS AFAIK.

Q9400 2.66 GHz
GA-EP45-UD3P
8GB DDR2-800
9800GTX+
250GB WD IDE 7200 RPM

No XP64 or Server08. You are going to want the OS that is going to have the most compatibility with games and that's Vista64. I use Vista64 and it's great.

Vista 64 is your best bet, though I'd lean more for Business or Ultimate than Home Premium, but that's just my opinion.

Yeh, no 2008. Games run fine.... but you will have issues with other stuff running properly. Vista64 is where it is at (or windows 7).

I found the site win2008workstation which seems to transform Server 2008 into something perfectly workable.

I've heard Windows 7 doesn't play nice with Punkbuster.

Even Balance does not release punkbuster for beta OS's.

x64 xp is a waste, do not bother.

2k8 has some fun things but ultimately would involve more tweaks than you probably want.

Go vista.

I'd suggest that, unless you have a Technet subscription or other professional access to a free copy, you'd do well to think about laying out the cash needed to licence a copy of Server 2003/2008 for a gaming rig. Not doing that would go a long way towards more/better gaming hardware. Plus the hassle and technical knowledge needed to tweak the OS, install and configure the necessary multimedia and device capabilities, etc etc etc.

Just go Vista 64. Or if you're the rabid Anti~Vista type, reach out and grab a copy of Win 7 beta to use until GA.

Vista Home Premium x64. It's a solid and great OS.

I have no idea about Server 2008, but I don't know what it would do to help you.

Don't even think about XP Pro x64. The driver support was horrid and made me want to beat my head against a wall sometimes. I doubt it's gotten any better in the last 2 years. It was really a niche OS.

Well I get it for free through Microsoft's DreamSpark so it's actually the most affordable. Next cheaper option would be Vista Home Basic x64 for $90 shipped on NewEgg (Home Premium is $10 more. Have heard you can unlock Aero in Basic)

Windows 7 Beta is free, also, so I would say it's between Windows 7 Beta and Server 2008.

I keep hearing ppl say to use Windows 7 Beta (which expires in 3 months). It isn't even available for download any more.

Sorry, Windows 7 Beta downloads are no longer available...

You guys got some secret source (and expiration hack) for W7 or something?!?!?

also it doesnt even run that great, many games wont run, many programs wont install.

This thread is funny because a few months ago everyone was gun ho about recommending server 08. Now its recommending a beta.

W7 will prob be good but right now vista is way better.

Also im pretty sure you cna google windows 7 download and get it pretty easy. As well as other places, p2p, newsgroups, irc, ftps, rapidshare... but whats the point.

Though using W7 for now is prob the best choice, would suck to buy vista now lol. I would even use 32bit if thats what you have, until 7 is ready.

Edit: I forgot to mention i have w7 on both desktop and notebook lol. Notebook has a ton of issues though. Desktop not as bad. Dual and tri boots...

Well right now I'm evaluation Vista Home Premium x64 for the 30 days I get pre-activation. (Figured I'm most likely to buy Home premium so I didn't select Ultimate at Installation)

So, On May 2nd we'll see where Windows 7 is and I will decide from there.

Disagree mildly; I was stunned to find every single driver I needed for my system about five months ago. Hated Vista 64 as well; it had nothing but problems on my particular system. Frankly, I love XP 64-bit. I'm Waiting for Windows 7. I think for gaming Vista 64 is the best bet, however. Server 2008 is not the way to go.
