New problem on my wife's Toshiba laptop with Vista.

She can't open or save anything from E-mail.

Every folder is set to read only.

When I uncheck the read only it goes through it's paces syaing it will unset folder and subfolders. Then check again and its still set for read only.

She didn't do anything to cause this.

This Vista is the biggest pile of crap I've ever seen and that goes back to the XT days.

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this latest Vista roadblock?

Folders can not be set to read only in Vista, only Files can. If you check the box on a folder's properties page it will only apply to the files inside the directory and NOT the directory.

Sounds like a user error to be honest.

Like XP, ALL folders will show "Read-Only" in the "Properties" menu. I doubt that's the source of your problem. Are all the individual files in the folder(s) marked "Read-only" too?

OK, you guys are straying off topic.

I just logged into my wifes e-mail on my XP machine and was able to open and save the file to her public download directory from my machine.

Cannot open or save anything on her own machine with Vista.

Off topic, you incorrectly brought up the folder issue, we corrected you.

As to the email issue, do you really expect anyone to have a guess here when you can't even be bothered to mention anything remotely relevant in your post. Like, is she a standard user or admin, where is she trying to save, oh, here's one WHAT EMAIL CLIENT are you refering to, etc....

Simply using Internet explorer using Yahoo mail.

Open and save attachments was working perfectly fine until recently.

I can still do it from my machine on hers.

Simple everyday stuff that breaks on Vista.

Lets skip opening for now. If you simply try to download the file, what dialogs do you get and what error messages occur?

First, thanks for the replies
------------------------------

None.

When click on save you can select the folder to put the file in.

It goes through the normal motion that is downloading the file.

If leave close box when done unchecked the box just closes with no error message.

The file does not get placed in the folder.

Ok, definately weird. As another poster asked, did you try resetting the IE cache, as the file is downloaded their first and moved to the destination. If the cache is corrupt you could see weird issues like this.

Try unhiding files and folders, then do a thorough search for that file on the entire local drive. It may take a few minutes. If you find the file note its location and make any adjustments when saving attachments, i.e. browse to the correct folder to save any attachments.

I tried this previously.

Oddly it did create a shortcut eventhough the file did not actually save to the destination.

Very weird as bsobel said.

I will try a cache purge

Double check that the cache path is valid as well.

Cleared the cache. Temporary internet folder seems normal.

This may sound simple, but did you check Where IE is set for the Default Download DIrectory ? ? ?

Here is how to change it:

Would you like to change the default location where Internet Explorer 6 downloads files? If so, you can perform this change by editing the registry. Note that this tip is for experienced users only - making incorrect registry changes can cause problems such as keeping your machine from booting! Standard disclaimers apply.

1. Click "Start" - "Run".

2. Start the registry editor by typing "regedit" and press ENTER.

3. Scroll down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
Microsoft\Internet Explorer.

4. In the right pane, double-click "Download Directory".

5. When the "Edit String" dialog appears, enter your new download directory. Make sure to type this EXACTLY correct - there is no option to browse for directories! When done, click "OK".

6. Close the Registry Editor. Close all open Internet Explorer windows. You may also need to reboot your computer or logoff and login for this change to occur.
