So I built a new PC. A couple of them, actually. A high end one to run the 47" 1080p LCD in the living room, and a low end one as a desktop.
The living room PC has:
E6600 Processor
Abit AW9D-Max Motherboard
2 GB Corsair XMS PC2-800
Geforce 8800GTS 640mb
2x250gb WD hard drives in RAID 0
Some pioneer SATA DVD burner that reads really slow...
Fusion HDTV5 PCI tuner
Antec Sonata 3 case
Antec Trupower 650w power supply (this PC killed 2 of the stock Sonata 3 500w power supplies)
Windows Vista Ultimate
Things seemed ok at first, but after I ran all my windows updates, the computer became very prone to freezing after starting up. I searched on the internet, and it seems like a lot people have this problem, but no one really has a solution. It'll start up, start to load a few start up programs then BAM, total freeze. No blue screen, no error. JUst frozen. I think it's related to some service.
If I start in safe mode, it never freezes. Starting regularly, it freezes 2/3s of the time. Really annoying have to start it up 3 times just to be able to use it.
By contrast, the low end desktop
E4400
nForce 650i Ultra motherboard
2GB Corsair XMS PC2-800
Geforce 8600GTS
1xSeagate 750GB hard drive
Antec Sonata 2 case
Windows XP home.
Is getting a lot more use, because it's extremely reliable.
So any ideas on what's wrong with Vista? What service is causing me so much pain?
This thread originated in Windows/PC Software, but it looks like it'll fit better in Operating Systems, due to the need to troubleshoot Windows and perhaps Windows services. The Windows/PC Software forum is intended mainly for apps that run on Windows or other PC OSes. Good luck with the troubleshooting. 🙂
