Vista - Disk Management question

I'm formatting a drive in Vista using Computer (i.e. Disk) Management. I accidentally closed the Computer Management window when it was at about 4%, and it didn't even prompt me not to close the window or anything.

Anyway, the HDD LED kept blinking, and I quickly reopened the utility, but it said it was "Formatting" (it wasn't at 4% anymore; I had to leave for a while, and when I came back, it was at 6%).

What exactly happened here? Does it keep formatting even if you close the window? Does it pause itself?

I figured, but what I don't totally get is why it took forever to go from "Formatting" back to a percentage report. I'm guessing Disk Management only refreshes once the percentage actually increments.
