What I would like to know is What exactly does this score do for you besides Nothing?

The score number is used as the minimum base for certain software. For example, if you look in the Games Explorer you'll see that Supreme Commander recommends a '4'. If nothing else it allows 'Games for Windows' to specify a minimium requirement which is simpler than (P42.66 of better, 512meg, agp video 4x, etc).... Most people can compare the number on the box they want to buy to their score and know if it will work or not...

But if you're a gamer and care at all about whether or not you can run the game well you will have knoeledge about your hardware in the first place.

That and I've already seen people compare the scores as if it was 3dmark 😉

All I can say is you have no understanding of the details of selling hardware and software to the mass market. As an advanced user you are expecting all other users to have the same level of understanding as you do, simply put, they don't. This is a very simple mechanism to make that better.

Um...you forgot that I was talking about people actually buying all the latest games that need tons of CPU and video power. The people buying these all the time probably know at least what their PC can run. Random Joe Blow from down the street isn't gonna be going out to buy Crysis. He probably doesn't even know what it is, nor care. The PC gamers buying the games will probably have at least some knowledge of their cpu speed and type and maybe how much ram and what type of video card they have. Personally I don't know how many "average users" would be buying QuakeWars, UT2K7, Crysis etc. which are the next wave of games that will probably take more power to play comfortably than those games before it.

Maybe you need glasses to see where I said gamer? 🙂

Your welcome to your opinion, it just happens to be incorect in this case. In your model games are limiting to a very limited subset of users while the obvoius trend is they are appealing to a very wide section of users. But I presume you're from your post you develop and sell games on the Games for Windows platform or are otherwise involved in this?
