Not looking good for Nvidia... hopefully their drivers will get better in a few weeks.

EDIT: LOL I hadn't seen page 8! http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/01/17/...-only-gets-worse-with-vista/page8.html

Not looking good for ATI either, haha. I'm not touching Vista until this stuff gets worked out or I'm forced to get DX10 hardware.

Someone jumped on NVIDIA a bit too fast. The benchmarks against ATI appeared on the second benchmark page! :disgust:

Look at all the pages, ATI's not great but it's in a better state than Nvidia. At least in some cases it manages to get the same scores as XP.

Umm, does ATI even have an OpenGL driver for Vista yet?

Ugly ugly ugly :(

Always great to see that switching to a new OS = poorer gaming performance

That being said, i hope both companies can pull off some miracle drivers before official release of Vista...

It's a good thing I can go out and buy Vista and use it today. Oh, wait...

I think thats missing the point.
Its not like they didnt know Vista was comig WAY ahead of time.

And the thing i dont get is, how the heck did they test directx 10 or even directx 9 in Vista if nobody had drivers and hardware in development along with Vista?

Firs let me say i dont play any FPS. I play RTS and both games i play used the Grybo engine. I have seen no slow downs at all. Not say they dont exist since i dont benchmark. BUt in game play it all seems teh exact same. My 9800pro and 7900GS both work fine. The 9800 pro has always been a little slow in the game. But consider it was never fast and I see no slow down I doubt any slower at all.

Just my 2 cents. I'm running Vista business.

I guess that would matter to some, but the vast majority only care about Direct3D.

And this comes as a surprise to everyone ?

MS comes out with an even more bloated OS, Draconian DRM, etc., etc., and people expect it to run faster with the same hardware . . . I don't get it.

Only because it's bundled with a new DX that does not intrinsically require Vista to begin with. That would be so awesome if some little genious out there figured out how to export DX10 into Win XP, best of both worlds!

It's an OS.

Is this going to enable your Monitor to display sharper images ?

No, it's just software. The only real selling point of Vista to me is DX10, and really there's no reason I know of that DX10 couldn't be made for XP.

Here's a comparison I'd like to see.:

What is the power consumption of Vista compared to XP?

We all know Vista is more demanding (thus higher HW requirements), so how much power does this new OS need just to idle? And how much extra heat?

Personally, the more I hear I about Vista the sicker I'm getting of it . . . .

haha yep. the only reason I can think of to buy it would be DX10. if they manage to release that on XP, no way I'm upgrading.

Which is EXACTLY MS would freakout if someone actually converted/released it without their consent. Wouldn't that just be great? :D

Problem is, Joe Schmoe is going to think this is all cool, not realizing what he's giving up (DRM).

And of course there are going to be game companies that only support DX10, so it's Vista or no game :disgust:

No win.

And jjzelinski, I wasn't picking on you in my earlier post, I just had some additional thoughts to add.

Thank God there is competition in the console market. If the main players keep upping the technological ante, there may not be a need for PC gaming at all....

Remember, if MS Vista gets too good at gaming, it may cut into the MS XBox sales ;)

Where do you think MS knows the majority of home user money will be spent on? :p

you are a complete moron. vista's drm is there because it has to be. without it no one who ownes protected HD content will be playing it in XP or any other OS that doesnt support the DRM.

if you dont have anything thats protected, like me and most everyone else who doesnt have a hd-dvd or blu-ray drive in their pc will never see anything different.

Don't know about what's up with ATi but the THG article checks out the 7900GTX. Check out MTDEW's results in the link he posted: 8800GTX with Forceware X 100.30 drivers. It's just 3DMark and two games but a step in the right direction.

To me, Windows Vista releases to the masses on January 30th. And all the drivers better be out that day. Until then, I choose to keep my opinions on ATi, nVidia and Microsoft to myself.

And wanderer, Vista is not Orthos or RTHDRIBL that will peg your CPU and GPU usage at 100% for it to turn up power consumption by any reasonable amount. And please try and understand what Digital Rights Management means. You say you speak for Joe Schmoe but you are sounding like one when you talk about draconian DRM. Look it up on Wiki or Google or something. So far, subpar performance reports in Vista are attributed to bad drivers or software that hasn't been patched/updated to better comply with it. XP had a decent performance hit compared to Win98 for gaming when it first came out...pretty soon, it became irrelevant. Then, it outperformed Win98.

Look at 8800GTX 3DMark scores: they are the same as XP. Now it's just a 3D Benchmark - but it runs exactly the same on 'bloated' Vista as it does on good ol' XP.

I guess you don't own many CD's, DVD's, games, etc.

That's fine.

Personnally, I don't like the DRM that's on XP, and it's fairly lame.

Vista is worse - period.

To me (and others) that's hard to swallow.

I bought the damn CD, DVD, game, etc. - I should be able to use it on my stuff any damn way I want too.

Everyone is always overreacting. This isnt the first time MS has released a new OS. We have gone through these very same changes several times over. Its always, "Im not moving to Win95, 3.1 is far better, or I'm not moving to XP, 98 is far better".

Everyone just needs to chill and relax, 7 years from now you will be saying how much you hate the new Windows Ultra 2014 edition and how much you jsut want to add Direct X 17 to your Vista.

Maybe some of you are jsut to young to remember these kinds of things I dunno.

Well thats funny because everything works the same way as XP, you can do anything with your games, dvds, cd, etc, the only thing that has DRM is BluRay and HD-DVD, in fact, I can even SHARE all my unprotected media with another Vista computer in a VERY EASY way (an icon shows up on the taskbar when a Vista computer on the private network opens WMV...) so I don't really know what you mean by worse DRM, I can use backups like I did before, Daemon Tools installs great, DVD Decrypter works fine, iTunes and WMV rips CDs no problem... I can burn whatever the hell I want on my DVD and CDs...

Have you people even used Vista? Draconian DRM? I almost bursted out laughing with that one.

And the above poster is correct, this is always the same situation with any OS. And for your information Vista uses less power than XP since it has better power management options, not only that, but Vista is actually FASTER than XP, yeah maybe not for games but once games start being developed with Vista in mind and DX10 then that gap will not only close, but widen in Vista's favor. Vista is faster on my old P4 box... but on my Mac Pro the difference with XP is ridiculous, seriously, bloated is the last thing Vista will feel like on a decent machine, ESPECIALLY compared with XP...

I suggest you people who criticize it actually use it, its very stupid to talk about something without previous experience, no, what you heard or read on a website doesn't count, also, NO, using Vista Beta doesn't count either.

Just a FYI, no one can release DX10 without Ms consent for xp......
