Vista Activation help

OK, I bought Vista home premium 64-bit OEM version to put on my new build. I had to change the motherboard since the original was defective and now Vista is telling me I have to reactivate. I called Microsoft like everyone on here has been able to do and they tell me that since this is an OEM and not retail version changing my motherboard violates the end-user license agreement. They want to charge me 60 bucks to "diagnose" the problem over the phone and maybe reset my product key. Shouldn't they just be able to reset it? I explained to them what happened with the mobo and that I had no way of knowing the mobo would crash and they wouldn't budge. Can anybody offer a suggestion?

Then you explained it poorly. Call back to activate, when they ask you why tell them you put in a replacement motherboard for a failed one. Thats it, thats all they need to know. If you got some group offering to charge you to fix it, you got to support not activations.
 
Tell them that you are the system builder performing a warranty repair, and that you need to reactivate.
 
Just call back. You don't have to explain the situation that much. Say you had to replace a "part" in your computer because it broke and all you know is that you bought Vista and need to install in the same computer.
 
I just lie....from viruses eating out my system..to defective hard drive, to whatever. It comes to the fact only one PC at a time runs this copy of XP, but this copy of XP has survived the death of 3 computers 😛. So i just tell them whatever they wanna here to reactivate it.
 
with MS and Vista this will become the norm, if you get through "this time" you most likely wont the next, we all know that hardware fails [MS included], its only the beginning, all the forums are being monitored by Ms personel.

Don't be paranoid. The activation policies haven't budged in years and even MS employees who post here have suggested that there's no reason to belive it's going to change anytime soon.
 
I just tell them I got a new OS HDD (most of the time i called up it was the case anyways). The less you tell them the quicker it is.
One time I just wanted to switch the Home premium and bussiness versions around on my laptop and 2nd comp.
They don't really care as long as you have it instaled only on one pc (which is the only thing they asked me anyways)
BTW my versions are all OEMs.
