Vista 64 problems

Hi guys, I have a problem with my OS which occurred after Symantec popped up and warned me about a process that was trying to access the internet.

I've had Vista installed for a while, now and it has updated OK until now. I went on it the other day and all of a sudden, Symantec came up with a warning popup that told me a process called lsass.exe was trying to access the internet. Now while lsass.exe is a legitimate process and had been working OK up until now with no Symantec warning, I assumed it might be the virus version which uses a name that looks like lsass, but is an imposter with a worm attached. I clicked the button where it said "do not allow" and the warning went away. I scanned the system and Norton says it is good.

Now I have a few issues, the Windows Update does not work, and it gives me a text box that says ...
"Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available. "

Thinking I had incorrectly terminated a necessary Windows process, I checked in the computer for that file and it says it's there, but I'm not sure if it's indeed the problem and even how to get it working correctly. I might have actually had that virus and it, too might be messing up my updates. I checked in "Services" and I can see that the BITS service, which controls update downloads is stopped and trying to restart it is unsuccessful.

I've also noticed that I can't see my other computer on my network as I want to share its printer and trying to turn on "Network discovery" doesn't work, I can check the box to turn it on, and when I hit "Apply" , still shows it as off. I'm not sure if the two are related but I really wish I could get my updates to work and figure out these issues.

Any thoughts? Anybody have this happen to them?

Thanks, Tom

P.S My system has an ASUS P5B-Deluxe board with an Intel E6400 processor, 2 GB of G-Skill RAM, Maxtor 320 GB hard drive and a Radeon X1300 video card. I have Vista Ultimate x64 running which is really starting to get on my nerves as I am constantly having issues with it. My other computer runs XP and is "old reliable"

Good Evening,

It might be several things...
Personally, I don't use any Sym@ntec products as those tend to do more harm than good. Moreover, better and cheaper alternatives are available.
I'd uninstall Sym@ntec, whatever you use of their product. Their products aren't Vista compatibile (yet?).
I'd get avast antivirus and scan all files.
I've used Vista Ultimate 64-bit for a good while now and all is fine.

Of course, I might be totally wrong.
Good Luck

Turn off blocking for isass, and/or switch back to the default symantec firewall setup, and that should fix the issue.

I too don't suggest symantec fw products - their av is great, but why use the rest?

I didn't see any blocking for that program, I tried disabling Norton and it still won't work. I then got MAD and removed Norton completely and it still doesn't work. I also tried updating Windows Defender after Norton was removed and that won't work either although it just tells me that it can't be updated, it doesn't mention why, I wonder if that is related. I tried to use system restore to restore system to a week ago and it still doesn't work.
