Vista 64 or 32?

My specs are in my sig and I have a question that I can't answer for myself.

I am going to install vista Ultimate this weekend (got it free from boss who bought a volume license). I do not know if I should install the 64bit or 32bit one. The thing that kills me is I need to use my iPod and iTunes will not function under x64 (or does it?). Apple says they do not support it. Does this mean it won't function? Second, I would not have a usable software to transfer and edit images from my Nikon D50 digital camera. What to do about that?

If I install the 32bit Vista I can use both of these in a fully functional manner, if I instal 64bit I would have to switch back to XP Pro to utilize these programs.

If I could at least get my iPod to somehow allow me to transfer songs to it (even 3rd party tool) then I would use 64bit without question.

It allows you to use the windows explorer interface to transfer songs to an ipod, video, photos, create playlists etc. Can also transfer files from your ipod to your HDD (iTunes won't do that. Says Vista is supported. It's like $30, but supposed to be a 1 time purchase and you can just download any newer version released. Gonna give it a shot

Well, i think it really depends which version you decide to go with.

If you're sticking w/ 32-bit, then you could add a third 1 GB dimm for 3 GBs, & run asyncronous dual channel (a feature on P965 chipsets).

Of course, for the 64-bit version, if you're upgrading RAM, then 4 GB would be sweet.

But 2 GB is fine too.

Basically, 2 GB is quite fine; 4 GB is nice for Superfetch use, since it should help speed things up in general.

Well, I just got my new G.Skill HZs in the mail today so I installed them and now am running back up to DDR2-800 3-3-4-12 @2.1v and was considering next week or so getting a 2nd set for 4GB if it was worth it. Got Vista x64 installed without issue and it's running good on 2GB as far as I can tell. My Crucial memory took a crap when I pushed 2.6v in them to see how far it'd go...removed the overvolt box (it takes up a DDR slot anyway).

edit: does anyone else notice network traffic to be much faster? I'm getting much faster downloads than before and everything on the network side of Vista seems more streamlined. I wasn't aware of this before I installed, very surprised.
 
64 bit is a right pain in the arse, but once you get it going it's quite impressive - it depends on how much you want to invenst (time wise) in it. Btw - whatever you heard about iTunes not working in vista 64 is complete bollocks, it works fine, albeit a bit slower. However, if you are the kind of person that prefers using iTunes over other media players, you deserve the lack of support....lol.

Basically, the only problem you might find with x64 is the drivers, every other piece of software I used under XP 32bit works fine. 3 GB seems to be the sweet-spot. Which reminds me, does anywhere sell PC4000 any more??????

First off, iTunes works and doesn't seem slow at all

Secondly iTunes is alot better than WMP for me...much better emcoding method (AAC sounds better to me than whatever MS uses), and it is easier to manage my playlist. Don't hate on it because it's apple, and I know 99% of people who hate on it do so just because they can't use their iPod without it (unless they buy 3rd party software) and it's from Apple. *shrug* I like it, it works, it's fast, doesn't have issues for me.

Third, what exactly is the problem you have with Vista x64? I could find drivers for everything from my printer, to my video card, to my sound card. No issues.
 
I could find the drivers myself, but I know ppl who couldn't - I agree iTunes is more of a taste thing, but I still can't get the damn thing to scroll properly - its horrifically slow and jumpy which makes finding music a complete pain. Didnt have any problems with it in XP and im guessing i wouldn't have had a problem with it under vista 32 either - but hey, I only have to use it now and again and I don't really wanna get into an iTunes v WMP debate. My point was, if you're an iTunes fan (and find it works a bit slow under x64) and you don't fancy having to trawl for decent drivers (X-fi support is still lacking features) then it might be best to avoid it.

PS which version of iTUnes are u using? I can only seem to get it to scroll smoothly when its in a small window, which isn't exactly the most efficient way of doing things

whatever the latest version is. I do not select the option to run in compatability mode.

My XFI doesn't seem to be lacking anything...it works as it did in XP (but I use it only for games or music).
 
There's no graphic equaliser for the x-fi yet in vista, meaning you have to use the ones built in to the media player, which are not as effective.
