Vista 64 bit vs. 32 bit?

I'd prefer to go with the 64bit edition of Vista Home Premium because I plan to go above 4GB of RAM. Are there still problems with 64bit operating systems? Are there performance hits that still exist? Thanks.

Just make sure you have driver support for your current HW. I'm VERY happy with Vista 64 and am running it on all 64bit capable machines.

I installed x64 last week and wouldn't go back.

dove in to 64 when Vista was released. Switched back to XP yesterday and won't go back for a long, long time. Absolutely horrid speed. It came and went but never was up to par with XP.. I believe I was an exception though.. I did run it on 2 different machines with pretty much th same outcome though..

My Vista x64 experience has been great, solid for gaming , general software has had no problems, can't complain at all, never going back to dated XP .

Same here. Vista X64 runs amazingly well on my system. There is no way I would ever go back either.

Does Vista have the drivers ready for all printers like Mac OSX does?

No OS includes drivers for all printers. That said, Vista does include drivers for many common printers.

Yeah, I forgot about my Mac not being able to use one of my printers, but I get the point that Vista is similar in that respect.

Has anyone found a working java plugin yet for FireFox? I'm running the 32-bit FireFox in Vista Ultimate 64-bit and I can't find a working Java plugin so a couple of websites I go to that require Java won't work.

I'm using Java with Firefox 2.0.0.3 ,works fine in Vista x64, get it here .

It opens a page you have to login to. I registered and logged in, but it's just a page that says:

I'm using Firefox v2.0.0.3 as well.

Think because its a timed session, so had expired, anyway go here and select link for "Java Runtime Environment 6.0 Update 1 Offline Installer " then one that says " Download Now! Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe 13.16 MB" .

Try closing all browsers before install too,and run as admin if needed.

Vista x64 works great on my Core 2 Duo desktop. I'm impressed at how well WoW handles many of the 32bit apps (even things like games, etc.) from within the x64 environment.

Just put Vista x64 on. So far I notice no speed improvements or anything different than the x86 version. Maybe I'm missing something, maybe there is a tweak, but have yet to see a 10% increase in performance like some have.
Dual Core setup here.

I wouldn't expect a difference when you're running x86 code (programs), the big difference is software that's built to take advantage of the platform. The support for large amounts of RAM helps a lot also.

I do have an issue with compatibility that I figured I would post. I tried out the C&C 3 demo the other day and it worked good and looked great (high quality @ 1600x1200 on my 8600GTS); so I ended up buying it last night, however the actual release version is not working for me at all. EA's stance is that they don't support x64, and their patches don't seem to make a difference.

Personally I think that if you wont support software on both the x32 version as well as the x64 version (WoW is fine) than your software doesn't support Vista.

I installed the 32bit version of Business because I dont have 4+GB of ram and was hoping 32bit has better compatibility with the apps I am using. So far so good, it is very stable and fast. But to be fair my WinXP was very stable and fast as well 🙂

I wont be going back to XP.

It seems to work okay so long as I don't install the 1.04 patch; but haven't run it for more than ~15 minutes or so.

The killer for me is that my iPod doesn't work at all in x64 version of Vista...so I'll just use the standard x86 one. Also, I see alot of apps don't work at all on the x64 version that kinda sucks because it was something I was looking forward to using...suppose I can't. The 32bit version supports 4GB of memory correct? Do I need 4GB really? I have 2GB now and some people say 2GB isn't enough 😕

edit: it also seems that my Digital Camera (Nikon D50) is unsupported in Vista 64bit using Nikon's PictureProject software (which my sister likes). I suppose I can use the 32bit version now...then later...clean install the 64bit one when my ipod works (I can live without the camera software).
