Do most new games work on the 64 bit such as HL2, etc.

You posted a similar topic in video in the past and I moved it to gaming, as I will now.

Yes.

They run a little bit slower, and if you're using nVidia the drivers are rumored to be bad, but the games work.

I plan to stick with Vista 32bit until Windows 7 is released in 2010. By then, software developers should be on the 64bit bandwagon fully. But as of right now, 64bit Vista for gaming is too troublesome.

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=80&threadid=2161325 says pretty much all that is needed.

Having played lots of games on XP x64 and Vista x64, I'd say only buggy game code may result in obvious performance drop under x64 as long as you keep your OS and drivers up-to-date. If you haven't updated motherboard BIOS for a long time, updating it may also improve x64 compatibility and performance. x64 capable Pentiums and older Core 2's had worse x64 performance than new Core 2's, Athlon 64's have always performed well on x64.

I use Vista x64. I've yet to have to do a single strange thing to get any remotely modern game to work.

I use Vista 64, no problems with any of my games so far. I even got everything from Crysis to Diablo2 running without any problems.

Shouldn't be any problem at all. I'm running Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights 2 and expansion, and a bunch of old games too with no issues.

Been running Vista 64 for a bit over a year. There were some bumps along the way but have been fixed with various hot fixes, driver updates, BIOS updates, and patches. I've been very happy with Vista 64's stability and compatibiity since November 2007 or so. Its by far more stable than XP has ever been for me. I typically never have to close any apps, leave games running (just alt-tab) between sessions and only reboot every few weeks between driver/bios/hot fixes. Runs everything I've bought in the last 2 years (about 20 games) flawlessly along with any older titles I've bothered to install.

This topic has been discussed ad nauseam. Many gamers here (myself included) have been running Vista 64 for ages with little to no problems and even most old games pose few issues.

The only problems I run into are for programs that check specifically for 32-bit OS's. All of my games work correctly but some applications give me errors saying it's for 32-bit only.

I too am running Vista x64 with absolutely no problems gaming. Actually, in HL2 it says "64 bit mode" so i'm going to take a shot in the dark and say it should have better performance than under x86. I haven't tested that theory or even looked it up so it's a complete guess.

Running Vista x64 on two machines (one AMD, one Intel- both with ATI cards) and haven't seen a single issue with any games that were caused by Vista.
