Vista 5308 is feature complete

guess Vista beta doesn't include a spell-checker, eh?

If the "biggest new feature" is a sidebar, you don't have to be a whiney mac user to let out a pretty big yawn. Add the fact that IE7 gets <WOW>tabs</WOW> and I'm gonna die from excitement.

Windows has never been known to be wildly innovative on the UI side. I call it a smart business decision by Gates, especially if the law allows him to rip off ideas.

I'm more interested in security improvements, and enterprise-level features... Vista and its successor (whatever they're calling blackcomb now) will still prove to have some interesting features. Whether or not Apple or Linux roll them out between now and 10 years from now is a completely different story...

I doubt that the code's been fully optimized yet, so it probably is still a long install.

In light of the meaningful Vista threads that have been posted over the last few weeks, your post fully exposes your ignorance on the topic.

Does it still take 3 hours to install ?
1 1/2 hrs on the Workstation in My Rigs (installed on a WD250).

It may be feature complete, but it is still driver 'light'. OOB, it does not recognize my ICH5R or Promise 378R controllers on the mobo. It also does not have Creative Audigy 2 ZS drivers and the current CL drivers do not work. I also need a Wacom driver as my Inspire is too slow with the stock HID driver.

Eye Candy cool is the opening background. It is animated and looks like some Aurora Borelis thing.

I stayed on topic... 😉 5308

Took a little over an hour to install on my laptop. AFAIK they've been more focusing on making things work properly and their attention will shift to performance more now that pretty much all of the features are there. Keep in mind that running with the debugger enabled also has a pretty signifigant performance hit.

The only reason you hear everyone talking about the sidebar is because it hasnt been around in builds since the pre-alpha days. Dont get too excited, it doesnt really do anything that Yahoo or Google's sidebar/widget apps dont.

😀 5308 is on the MSDN site now! 😀

I'm going to download overnight and try another install on my T42 tomorrow (time permitting). I will report back with the results.

Yeah - just got in to work and seen it's there. Downloading it now.

Yep, nothing new in Vista except a lame sidebar and some tabs. You've uncovered the conspiracy.

Have any of your 53 posts contained any useful content whatsoever?

:disgust:

I have already 'sold' it to my wife. Majhongee (or ever the heck how you spell it) for the win 😛
Funny you say that, my wife saw me messing with it the other night and is already asking me if Vista will run on her laptop because of that game...

It's like a Microsoft conspiracy to make me spend money

Well I got it up and running on my T42. I've been busy so I haven't had much chance to mess around with it but I can already say a few things:

1) Installed *MUCH* faster. Start to finish was < 75 minutes. I was in a meeting for a bit toward the end of the install so I can't say exactly how long it took.

2) I had zero errors. The 5270 build took several tries and even after finally (3 hour install?) finishing it was buggy.

3) I like some of the added interface features. Can't go into everything here but I like it. One thing I haven't figured out is how to set *all* folders to have the exact same view.

4) The eye candy looks nice.

5) The bad? Had a few Explorer.exe crashes and Control Panel locked up once.

Do you see any benefits in running Vista over XP on your laptop? i remember reading something about laptop specific feature.

Thanks!

So far, I am getting a Stop A, but I am thinking that my be the Creative Labs drivers. It stops at the end of shutdown and it blue screened then green screen stopped on startup, but continured - resilient. Got a few Explorer crashes too. But, I also have 5 unk devices, a non-working Wacom driver, and a buggy Audigy 2 driver.

For the five unknowns, have you run automatic updates yet? There are a lot of drivers available through AU now.

I did notice under power management there was a selection for performance, balanced, and power saving. I think that's new as I don't remember it in XP Pro.

Unfortunately my Vista load bombed. I was messing around loading software and Alcohol 120% (my favorite image burning app) borked it. I got a BSOD during the install and BSOD on reboot. Safe mode BSOD's as well. I'll probably reinstall and not add any additional programs just so I can play with Vista for a bit.
