Vista 512 Ram Workaround?

Anyone know of a way around the 512 ram requirement for Vista RC1? My laptop is from 2002 and maxes out at 384. Is there a workaround of any kind? Not planning to keep it on that computer but want to give it a shot.

Even if you were to install it, it would be so unbearably slow I don't recommend it, unless you enjoy frustration.

After a clean install, Vista takes over 512MB of physical RAM on boot, which means you'd be swapping right out of the box. It won't be a pleasant experience.

I agree. Even with 1gb of ram vista is usually using about 85% of it.

Once i took all but one stick of RAM (from 1.5GB to 256MB) just for fun....and

utmost misery

-it took vista 5 minutes to load

-it took me another minute of wait to press the shodown button

-it took it at least 3 mins to shut itself down

all on RAID0 drive.

This is so not true. On my laptop with 768 MB it is using about 42%. On my desktop with 1 gig it is using about 42%...

Vista runs just fine on both systems, Even on my desktop at home with 1 GB running Aero Glass...

so why is it that OS get more and more bloated over the years. Seeing that i thought XP pro was bloated, hearing about Vista and that it uses 512mb just to boot up makes me cringe.

Aero is like 3D game, takes lots of RAM. Lots of RAM goes to disk cache as well (that is why Linux for example has large mem. consumption).

And it has too many services.

That's the only bad thing about, on boot up mine uses about 750MB. Hopefully there is still debugging code to be removed.

i am already emberrased to run it with one gig, thinking about gaming etc.

384MB and vista ? Much luck :) You'd basically run the whole OS off the pagefile..if it would even work :)

services can be turned off, so can aero.

Still i think its BETTER to just get more ram...otherwise there is no point in vista.

Assuming the OS wouldn't fit into 384M, there'd be a lot of paging but I doubt there'd be much pagefile usage.

That machine is NOT a candidate for a Vista load. There's no point to even trying to get a useable Vista on that machine. none.

What make and model is it? The RAM might be upgradeable. 2002 models often could take 512 - i.e., a pair of 256 SODIMMs.

So to run vista I'll need more RAM and a new video card :( don't think I'll bother.

My first computer running DOS 3.something had 4 MB of ram and it was considered very fast.

More RAM - probably (if you have less than 512MB)

New video card - not necessary unless you want the Aero Glass desktop (which I have to admit is pretty cool, it makes portrait mode on my LCD usable again since it uses Vsync on the desktop :p)
