Is this for real? I'd like to think I would have heard of anything this controversial...

Petition

The INS recently announced a proposal to eliminate the current maximum six months admission period for B-2 visitors (tourist visa category). This new regulation, which proposes to give the immigration officers arbitrary authority to limit the admission period to 30-days for tourists, will impact significantly the lives of millions of law-abiding citizens, residents and legally-admitted non-resident aliens (H1B workers, Students etc.) of the United States. Many new immigrants and non-immigrants of this country invite their parents and loved-ones to spend some time with their children, grandchildren, friends and relatives. Some of these tourists fly for more than 36 hours to get close to their family and friends and are jetlagged for at least a week after arriving into this country. These visitors almost always depart within the time duration permitted by the INS, which typically is 6 months.

Jetlagged for a few weeks? thats a BIT of an exageration. B-2 is a tourist visa as you stated, MOST tourists don't stick around more then a month and due to the INS being under a TON of heat over the sept. 11 stuff, them keeping track of those entering the country on short term visas is important to them. also its not to terrible to get a new visa for extended stays, or even a different class of Visa that would allow a longer stay.
