Now is the best time go to because it isn't super hot yet and it seems like the smog levels have been low.

As far as stuff to do, not much. Get lots and lots of cheap massages.

roughly the same although thailand may be a bit more expensive

There are two seasons.... hot/wet and hot/dry. Go during the dry season.

I'd recommend, if you're white and not rather rough looking, to stay in the nicer or more touristy areas.

There are some really nice places. And minus the cost of the flight, it is pretty cheap.

You should be okay then. If you happen to be (or look) Korean, people will love you. They are currently obsessed with Koreans.

I'm headed to the Philippines during the Christmas holidays, should be interesting. Any things i should see in Mindanao? I did see that 2 Canadians were kidnapped there a couple of months ago..

If youre even remotely white, stay in the main cities...Davao, Zamboanga, Cagayan, and Santos. Mindanao is largely occupied by the Abu Sayyaf Dont go off the beaten path there. Whole different story in Luzon or Visayas.

There seems to be a ton of things to do depending on what you're looking for. I'm going next week, but I will be accompanied by a local most of the time, so that will help me a lot.

Baguio
Fortune Island

Those are great places, but north in Luzon. If the OP wants to hop on a plane, sure. Otherwise not doable for him.
