Take the AirTrain to Jamaica station, then hop on an E and it'll drop you off at your front door (53rd and 7th). $7 instead of $50+ for a cab ride. Jamaica station is a bit less scary than a bus stop at 125th for tourists, IMO.

For thrifting, check out the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market (39th between 9th and 10th) and Greenflea on Columbus between 76th & 77th (weekends only).

:) cool.

I really enjoyed takin' the train and bus.. there was a minute or so of lost in new york feelin' goin' on when they bypassed my intended stop but I figured there's info people at the stations and they'd know how to fix it.. so once I'd settled on a plan my brain started functioning again and I realized I actually knew enough myself to get where I wanted to go. I was pretty pleased with myself. taking the bus and train was fun.. an adventure. and.. pretty much free.. I bought 7 day passes and we used 'em to death. I would have liked to find someone to give them to at the airport, they still had plenty of use left in them, but when we actually got there I forgot to try.

it was way fun though. the shows were amazing. :) I'm already sorta plotting a return with my husband next fall.
