*update*

we came and went. Boy, NYC is HOT in august.. wow. In traditional ATOT fashion, I asked for advice and then pretty much ignored it all.. not intentionally, thank you all for it, I've got it saved and ready to print for my next trip.. unfortunately, at 4:30 monday morning my brain wasn't functioning well enough to remember to print it for this one. :p

we did take the bus and the train from la guardia, but on the advice of a very helpful airport security gal, we took the q33 bus to... roosevelt something and.. somewhere, and then the blue E train to the hotel. it worked flawlessly. yesterday on the way back, we had to be out of the hotel by noon and had a little time to kill before we needed to be at the airport so we went to grand central station to look around (I figured it's a train station.. people with luggage oughta fit in..) and then took the purple 7 train back to that roosevelt/whatever stop to catch our Q33 bus back to the airport.. I'ma pro now :p, I knew just what I was doing BUT! there was construction? and the local 7 train went express on us before we got there and skipped our stop! *horrors*! so we ended up riding that all the way to the end (main street, flushing.. another chinatown?) and got the q48 bus instead, way easy, it was waitin' when we got to the top of the stairs. I was glad I'd noticed that the other airport bus did go to the end of that same train line.

That was cool though, really cool.. because that train goes past shea stadium and the unisphere!! the last time I was in NYC for longer than an overnight layover was when I was a little girl and we went to the worlds fair.. so it was really cool to go past.

anyway.. we had a great time. we went to top of empire state building at night, rode staten island ferry, went to coney island and the aquarium, wandered around little italy and chinatown and surrounding places, shopped, ate, saw spamalot and dirty rotten scoundrels.. it was a whole bunch of fun. I'm going to do it again some day. in.. october. boy, it's hot in new york in august..

cliffs:
1. went to NYC
2. did not take a cab.
3. had fun
4. came home.

but I'm afraid if I put my questions on an existing thread it'll get ignored. :)

we're leavin' tomorrow for a few days in NYC, myself and my kids (18 and 21) and my daughter's boyfriend. have tickets to spamalot wednesday. :) we're stayin' at the sheraton ny hotel and towers at.. 7th and 53rd, and flyin' in to la guardia and I'm plannin' to hop that m60 bus and then take the subway to the hotel. I figure I want to take the orange subway, that'd be the B one, I think.. and I'm gonna get off the m60 bus at 125th street, according to my map, which looks kinda like harlem, and then take the orange B train to.. what looks to be right to the door of the hotel, more or less. Does that sound like an OK plan? will it work in reverse when it's time to go back to the airport? the transit authority site says the bus will take about 40 minutes, I figure maybe another half an hour for the train? so if I allow 2 hours for the return trip to the airport.. I'll probably get there on time? I mean 2 hours traveling.. 3:55 flight out, if we start heading that direction around 1pm on thursday we oughta get to the airport in time to get on our flight? or should I allow more time than that?

that's what I most need to know (because that's what I'm obsessing about :p ) but I wouldn't mind some suggestions of good interesting affordable places to eat, I understand that it's in the best interest of my pocketbook to not shop or eat in the general area in which we're sleeping. some of them aren't very adventurous eaters but as long as there's a wimp-friendly chicken option (low on heat and vegetables) on the menu then we'll consider it. pasta, mexican, salads, sandwiches, .. a good gyro would make the trip for me. :)

I'm not sure what else we're going to do.. we plan to ride the staten island ferry at some point because it's free and I understand provides some good photo opportunities (my son is not a broadway kinda guy but he is some kind of attached to his camera, so he agreed to endure the play and maybe even another one, if it meant getting to go to new york to take pictures), and the older kids went to the museum of the moving image (or something like that) when they were there in december, he wants to go there and they don't mind going back so we'll probably do that.

we have b1g1 coupons to guggenheim (or howver you spell that) so we might do that and he'd like to go thrifting... got any good thrift shops to recommend? heh.. maybe that's a tall order.. he figures the stuff in the goodwill store in NYC is bound to be more interesting than the stuff in the goodwill store in south carolina.. and he's probably right. I think maybe we'll head to the village for an afternoon/evening if we don't end up going to a second play and maybe a zoo one morning? votes on central park or bronx?

Take a cab from the airport to the hotel, the bus to the train is not a wise idea IMO anno :)

be sure you get on the subway with an ipod and the earbud wires sticking out. then post a really one-sided thread about your experience.

I was there this past spring and went to a good Italian restaurant on 47th and 9th called Pietrasanta. It's a little pricey, but I thought it was worth it. You should try it.

you really think? :( that's less scary to me than a cab.. I understand busses and trains.. once you get on them you just go where they're going, you just look at the line on your map and that's where it's going to go. cabs, you're stuck in a small vehicle with a scary stranger who goes wherever he wants to go.. since you got no idea where you are anyway. and since there's 4 of us and I'm the old one, I'm the one gonna have to sit with the scary guy. I really like the bus/train idea better.. is it truely bad idea?

I took subway from JFK to Brooklyn. No worries. Just don't switch trains in Queens, do it in Manhattan.

I second the "take a cab" idea. It'll be crazy to carry all your luggage onto the bus and subway... not to mention us natives will get annoyed when you block the door. :) Otherwise, a B or D train should get you to where you need to go (F train is also orange, but that's not going to do it).

Uncle Nick's has a decent gyro. Chinatown has TONS of cheap eats, but the area is dirty and smells. Big Wong on Canal St./Mott St. has good Chinese food (service is another story). Little Italy is next to Chinatown, so you can stop there for Italian food as well. I like Arriba! Arriba!'s Mexican food. But in general, food will not be an issue.

Oh, and don't buy NYC subway maps in SC. I alway see tourists with their own maps that are often outdated. NYC subway and bus maps are free at the stations. If you need to do planning around NYC transit, use maps located at the MTA website. BTW, weekend schedules/routes for the subway can be significantly different from weekday version, so check postings in the subway or ask the teller.

EDIT: Sorry, I have no clue what thrift shops are. Things to do: WTC site, Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA, anything at Time Square at night, shopping at Herald Sq (34th St subway station), shopping for knock-offs at Chinatown, walk thru Central Park (or boating within Central Park).

thanks for the food info. :) I didn't buy a map.. I think the kids (daughter/bf) have one from when they were there in december, but I'll pick one up when we get there.. I found one on the transit authority website and printed out the section that got me from la guardia to the hotel so I had something to study and plan around.. beyond getting to and from the airport I'm probably going to (at least mostly) let the kids decide what we do. (well.. and I really would like a gyro..)

oh.. and we're just comin' for 3 days.. just carry-on's, nothin' won't fit on our laps.. not travelin' at rush times or on weekends so we really ought not inconvenience anyone on the trains..

if you're in chinatown, there is a nice ice cream shop (I think its Dragon something or the other). I use to get ice cream there when i was younger, its pretty good! its got a big fat green dragon for a sign, so you cant miss it. its on Bayard St. between Mott St. and Elizabeth St. (Bayard St. is a street that runs parallel to Canal St.)

if you want to get your teeth pulled, go visit Dr. Lions on Worth Street. :p

When I went we didn't have a reservation and only had to wait a few minutes. It probably depends on when you go.

WTF how is that bigoted. Seems like social commentary to me. If you don't want to get hassled by crappy cops then its a good idea to be white. NYC cops suck.
