Visiting National Zoo in DC, anything I should know?

I have to visit for Bio 101 and I've always wanted to go anyway. Anything important I should be aware of? Will be driving to the Vienna metro and going in from there. Am thinking I should only take my cell phone because it has the camera and if I can get a PDF viewer, I wont even need to print out the assignment. Can go downtown free of encumbrance, which is the best way to do it if you are a white, non-native.
On the way back will probably stop at Union Station for grub.

Yes - first of all it's huge and it's free! I love that it's free. Also, look for the cool bridges overhead which allow the monkeys to go from cage to cage. Also, check out the cool goats who sit and sleep on bridges. So awesome.

Union Station is not on your way back unless you miss your transfer back to orange at Metro Center.

The zoo is free, which is nice. Pace yourself, though. The zoo on the way in is all down hill, which means the path back out is all up hill. It's basically one long walk down, and then a walk up the other side back up.

it is one of only three free zoos in america
the elephant exhibit is being renovated
the panda exhibit is cool
it's an alright zoo... not as good as the st. louis zoo, but still cool.

the zoo sucks so just be ready, went last summer and it was boring as shit and a lot smaller than i remembered.

also, get off on the cleveland park station instead of woodley park zoo. that way you can walk down the hill instead of walking up the hill to get to the zoo. and when you leave, walk down the hill to the woodley park station.

EDIT:

and yea if you are driving to Vienna then union station is not on your way at all, its out of the way.

and lol wow, you might as well wear a fanny pack and an I <3 DC shirt to the Zoo since you sound pretty ignorant about being scared to carry a camera with you to the zoo, thinking you will be the only white person in that part of DC. you soung very ignorant.

I didnt say Union Station was on the way, I said I would visit Union Station on my way back at the end of the day.
I also didnt say I was the only white person in any part of DC. I said being white makes me a target. And I didnt say I was afraid to carry my camera, I said it would be easier to use my phone camera cuz it means carrying less shit.
And if my 30 or so visits in the past year are any indication, yes, I am a target being white in DC. Neighborhood having a small effect in either direction.

I only asked about the zoo cuz I have never been there.

Do you guys only read every other word in a post, and focus on the ones that let you vent your stupidity?

But thanks for the help anyway, I appreciate it.

The National Zoo is a nice zoo. It's one of the few places in the US where you can see giant salamanders. The orang high-rope is awesome if the orangs are using it - watch out for flung feces. 🙂 As someone else mentioned, there might be roving gangs of small monkeys. Have fun. 🙂

Rugrats?
Crap.
I hate rugrats. They scream and whine.
Really wish the professor would just let us use an encyclopedia.
Or at the very least the required trip to DC should have been put in the course manual. As if I didnt spend enough fucking money on the shitty college and ridiculously overpriced textbook, and lab fees. Now theres a hidden cost of a trip. Am glad the zoo is free, but getting there sure as hell wont be.

I will go in, do what I gotta do, and get the fuck out. No time to stop and enjoy myself.

Just like my last 3 girlfriends.

it's "meh". definitely not the worst zoo i've been to and definitely not the best.

yeah, I remember it being near Georgetown?

I was way young though...

Sort of near Georgetown - Woodley Park (where the zoo is) further north and slightly east of it. Pretty much identical demographics though. Gtown exceeds it in the smug factor, though, just because they don't have and will not allow a metro stop to be built there.

yea that sucks and is a major reason when i go out georgetown isn't one of the main areas I go if i want to drink, cause then i can't just hop on the metro home.

Are you over 21? The adults only events get large crowds and are usually a blast.

The event is sold out but you can probably still score a ticket to the Night of the Living Zoo off Craigslist. Friday, October 29, 8 p.m.-12 a.m.

Just remember that the Metro shuts down fairly early. Miss the last one and it is an expensive cab ride or a night in a hotel, unless you get lucky.

The night will culminate with a spellbinding performance from Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. Named one of the Best New Bands of 2010 by Rolling Stone Magazine, the Vermont-based band is on tour supporting their new eponymous album and fiery single “Paris (Ooh La La).” Also performing from San Antonio, Texas, “Hacienda” and psychedelic blues band “GHz.”

Magic Hat Brewery is sponsoring, so the beer is going to be good.

When Hippos/Rhinos look pissed off, and turn their back and wave their misserable tail...

You might want to leave the area.

FWIW, pissed off Giraffe's, Ostriche's, or Apes, can't be good either.

Did you say you were voluntarily going to the Zoo?
